20 Years In the Making...
NYSRPS Districts Renamed  'Regional
Partners' with Better Definition and Guidance

NYSRPS is very pleased to announce on February 25th 2016 the Executive Board adopted renaming our current Districts as "Regional Partners". The word 'District' carried the implication of taxation associated with it, so it was decided a new term 'Regional Partner' would be used to name these organizations like Genesee Valley Recreation and Park Society and Central New York Parks and Recreation Society.

During this time of renaming NYSRPS decided to form a sub-committee to better define what a Regional Partner is exactly and clearly communicate the benefits Regional Partners receive. Along with providing this outline of benefits, a guideline had also been developed so an organization wanting to become a Regional Partner could easily see the steps necessary to formally be recognized by NYSRPS as a Regional Partner.

One of the great benefits of having Regional Partner status is receiving a check twice a year for reimbursement of memberships. GVRPS and Central NY Recreation and Park Society will be receiving checks this week for $513 and $429 respectively- with NYSRPS handling virtually all billing, receiving, tracking memberships. Focus is also on these areas with program development and membership recruitment.

NYSRPS has experienced our membership strongholds lie in areas served by Regional Partners. Membership numbers are climbing (near 100) in each of our current Partner Regions, they host regular meetings, have active award & recognition programs for their local members. Regional Partners simply have more time to dedicate to serving their membership without the administrative burdens and costs that State Office is able to relieve.

We hope if you are in a region not currently served by a NYSRPS Regional Partner you might consider becoming a Regional Partner of NYSRPS. Your organization is able to maintain complete autonomy (and that is encouraged), with your own Board, Bylaws, Constitution and finances. The relationship is merely a mutually beneficial business agreement that both NYSRPS and the Regional Partner enter into. Should you want to see the full  REGIONAL PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM GUIDELINEclick here.

Why is is this happening? NYSRPS has seen over time how beneficial this kind of partnership can be for both parties and wanted to develop a structured guideline for organizations to follow. NYSRPS hopes to provide not only this guideline but also supplemental information regarding operating as a not-for-profit corporation so groups are better informed how they should be operating.

For specific questions regarding Regional Partnerships and how they might benefit your park and recreation professionals- please contact NYSRPS Executive Director Lisa Morahan at (518) 584-0321 or by email at [email protected].

From LILSA Board President Gail Lamberta:

As we move into March, many of us on Long Island, are preparing for our spring and summer programs and services. Well, we at LILSA are doing just that and also preparing for the upcoming NYSRPS Annual Conference and Business Expo, which will be held at the Hyatt Regency April 17-19th, in Hauppague, Long Island.

Our committees continue to work very hard and as you have seen in our preliminary brochure, we have put together an exciting program as well as four off-sites, and socials. Many of you have been involved with organizing annual conferences, and know how much work is involved. Although much of the work is happening here on Long Island, we would also like to reach out to all of you for some assistance as well.

What will we need? One big item is donations for our silent auction and raffle. If you have a basket or a raffle item, please let us know.

We are also in need of session moderators. If you would like to moderate a session, again, please let us know. We have 70 sessions to cover. If you have any students who would like to volunteer to moderate, or assist in any other way, please let us know.

Now for the last item...we want to be sure you register and attend the 2016 NYSRPS Annual Conference and Business Expo! You won't be disappointed and you will learn new ideas by participating in our educational sessions, get a hand-on experience through one or more of our off-sites, and have a really great time networking and having fun at one of our socials.

So keep your eyes open for our e-mails with updated information. If you have any questions, please contact the NYSRPS office.

We will see you in April!!
