Yelapa

Yelapa. Just say the word and you'll see a lazy smile and far-away look come across a person's face.
Tranquil. Relaxing. Fun. Remote.
Though not an island, you can access Yelapa by boat only. The coastal highway juts inland at Boca de Tomatlan, only halfway there, and the only roads through the jungle take a long and circuitous route to the outskirts of the area. The village's remote location has shielded it from the modern life and progress in Vallarta.
Yelapa is a protected indigenous community with roots dating back to the 1500s
. In the 1960s, there was an influx of expats to the area, and today the village retains a distinctly laid-back "summer of love" vibe, with small cafés, restaurants and visitor accommodations.
Outsiders (non-indigenous residents) are allowed to lease the land in Yelapa, but ownership is legally protected for the indigenous communities.
No roads into Yelapa translates to no cars. Dozens of
pangas (small boats) are anchored in the bay, and on land people get around on foot, horseback or ATV. The wide crescent beachfront accommodates a handful of open-air restaurants, and visitors tend to spend the day sunbathing and swimming.
There are several hotels for overnight visitors, or you can just ask around f
or a room. Although a few establishments take credit cards, there are no ATMs in Yelapa, so make sure you take enough cash.
