A beautiful statue is mounted at the fork of Asylum and Farmington Avenues in Hartford. It was designed and sculpted by Frances Laughlin Wadsworth in 1952.

It is that time of year for Hartford parents to begin the process of thinking about which school they would like their son or daughter to attend for the coming school year.

Most often in this column we show the great changes that have occurred in the neighborhood, but in this photo you can see how little has changed in the basic structure of this beautiful old brownstone church build 150 years ago. Granted it didn't yet have the steeple and clock, and the fence was wood not wrought iron, and Asylum Ave. was yet to be paved, but still anyone living then would easily recognize the church today. And
given the work that was done both on the brownstone and the slate roof in the recent past, it should live long into the future.

Exploring Asylum Hill:
Capitol View Deli
 
While the Capitol View Deli has been a fixture in Asylum Hill for 20 years, like much of the neighborhood, it has gone through some changes. Originally, Capitol View was a "mom & pop" business with all three of Donna's children having done their "Life internships" there over the years.

After more than a year of intense meetings and thoughtful discussion, Hartford finally has an all-new zoning code. It replaces the 50+ year old use based code that has been amended so many times it became an impediment to both development and enforcement.

Hartbeat Ensemble: 'Meet Us Where We Are'

Following up on a very successful production of "Jimmy & Lorraine" and "West End: Hartford " in 2014, Hartbeat is focusing on Asylum Hill this time. As you may know, Hartbeat is dedicated to creating stage plays based on first hand research with the intention of fostering social change through theatrical art.

From January 22nd to March 4th, more than 60 photographs by Asylum Hill resident Maurice Robertson will be on display at the Hartford Public Library's 3rd floor ARTWALK exhibition space.

Friends of Sigourney Square Park will meet next in April

Quality of Life Committee;
Car breaks are down due to 3 separate arrests and HPD is conducting car break operations on the overnight shift where there are the highest numbers of occurrences.
The "do not enter" signs at South Marshall and Case St have been replaced with brand new signs.
Numerous quality of life arrest have been made at 10 Marshall Street as well as panhandling arrests at the Farmington Avenue corridor.
"Apple Picking" (theft of iPhones by thieves on bicycles) is up several have been recovered by police due to Find My Phone app which is highly recommended.
Hartford has a new replacement for See Click Fix called Public Stuff and they recommend all concerned citizens download the free app.

Communications Committee;
Discussed and chose articles and columns for the current issue of News & Views
The committee discussed status of advertisements for News & Views in Hartford News.
AHNA Communications and Library Interactions; discussed how the committee and the Library could work together to improve awareness and coverage of activities. Will be working with Assistant Children's Librarian on a calendar of events and potential column of feedback from the kids involved in library programs.
Website; discussed status and updates to site.

  Welcoming Committee;
      H ad not met as of press deadline. Their 1/28 agenda includes the following:
Temporary space for the Multicultural Center at Mark Twain branch - opening event, weekly schedule, volunteer coverage, activities etc.
Where are We Going in 2016- planning for the upcoming year
