Illuminations of Africa's Wildlife:
Its Beauty, Its Struggle to Survive

Through Sunday, April 24, 2016

Beverly Joubert's work is a call to action. Big cats, rhinoceros, and elephants are in crisis, facing extinction after years of rampant poaching and habitat loss. As artists, conservationists, and National Geographic Explorers-in-Residence, Beverly and her husband, Dereck Joubert, have spent decades fighting for these beloved creatures. Through their internationally renowned wildlife films and other conservation efforts, the Jouberts celebrate the stunning beauty and power of these animals, urging viewers to recognize the consequences of inaction.
With stories of this fight for survival, Beverly Joubert's photographs demonstrate the artist's deep compassion for her subjects. Her work at the Kimball Art Center is accompanied by thoughts, lessons, and illuminations by the Jouberts of their 30-year journey with some of the world's most remarkable wildlife.

Education Update

EVA (Elementary Visual Art) Program (in partnership with PCEF):
In honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday, March 2nd, this month 's  lesson incorporates his book The Lorax and the work of Beverly Joubert, artist, photographer, and explorer in residence with National Geographic (currently on exhibit at the Kimball Art Center). Students will focus on art as activism, language arts and environmental issues.  Teachers will read all or part of Seuss' book The Lorax to students to prompt discussions about environmental issues.  Students will learn about Beverly and Dereck Joubert and their fight to save the rhinos, cats and elephants from distinction.  Beverly's photography is her unique call to action, to have others become aware of these animals through their beauty and their stories. Students will illustrate an image to depict either messages from The Lorax or an environmental issue such as endangered animals, air pollution etc.  Their art will tell the story.

ARTS (Academic Resources for Teachers and Students) School Program:
ARTS tours is excited to announce the successful implementation of Altru (computer software program) to create an online sign-up for teachers. We have had multiple schools and teachers use the automated system, reducing the amount of time needed to communicate via email. This sign-up should see more use as more and more teachers hear about and become familiar with the online system.

We've also had great responses from teachers and students alike about the ARTS tour project, which continues to be one of the best sources of advertisement for ARTS tours. As other teachers see the finished photos from other classes, they continue to sign up rapidly. Currently we have over 1,600 students registered for the  Illuminations of Africa exhibit.

Young Artists' Academy (YAA):
After wrapping up their representational self-portrait masks, students are delving into their Wastach Back Student Art Show creations!

KAC Art Classes:
Scheduling of our summer camps and classes is underway and will go live at the end of the month.  Plan early as registrations fill up quickly!

Kimball Clay:
The construction of our new studio is almost complete as we aim to open at the end of month.  Please stay tuned for more details.

Free MEMBER ArtTalk March 24th

Join us at The Deer Crest Club at St. Regis Deer Valley will host our Thursday, March 24th Art Talk from 6PM - 7:30PM.

Chuck Newhall will discuss his book and will sign for attendees afterwards at which time cocktails will be served.  *Sponsored by Dolly's Bookstore

Newhall is not the scruffy, homeless, stereotyped Vietnam vet suffering PTSD. He is, in some ways, more typical of the majority of veterans with PTSC who have struggled to keep their lives on track in the years since they came home from the jungles.

The National Institute of Health believes nearly a third of Vietnam veterans suffer from PTSD. Of the nearly 2.6 million who served in Vietnam, about 1.5 million experienced actual combat. The PTSC rate among combat veterans is higher. Newhall experienced the full horrors of vietnam.

"Chuck Newhall's compelling narrative account of combat action in Vietnam takes you to one of the darkest  hellholes on earth-the A Shau Valley in 1968. Just when you thought that the war was over, Fearful Odds packs a punch in the gut you will be feeling for a long time."
-Joseph L. Galloway, author of We Were Soldiers Once...and Young
