Did You Know?
On Jan. 26, 1700, the West Coast experienced a Cascadia subduction zone earthquake with an estimated moment magnitude of 8.7-9.2.

The moment magnitude is used by seismologists to measure the size of earthquakes in terms of the energy released, using a calculation of the rigidity of the Earth multiplied by the average amount of slip on the fault and the size of the area that slipped. Read more on OPB.com.
