Illusionist Jason Latimer Wows West Union
Students at West Union Elementary School were in for a treat on Thursday, Jan. 21, when world champion illusionist and "curator of impossible science" Jason Latimer performed for them at a school assembly. His message is: "Work hard and anything is possible." He encourages people to be curious, ask questions, and challenge conventional wisdom about what can be accomplished.

Equity-Focused Dialogue Session: Feb. 2
|
|
The District is hosting its second equity-focused dialogue session, "Multiple Perspectives: An Interracial Dialogue," on Tuesday, Feb. 2, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Hilhi library, 3285 SE Rood Bridge Rd. The topic is: What are microaggressions and how do they impact people? Spanish interpretation and childcare are available. RSVP to Patricia Ramirez.

Chinese Student Visitors at Jackson
|
|
Jackson Elementary School's Confucius Classroom teacher, Wanda Chen, arranged a visit for 11 students and their chaperones from the Bocai (pronounced Botsai) School in Hunan, China, from Jan. 20 through Feb. 2. The visitors will be doing a variety of activities in the school and around the metro area during their time here.

Fathers' Advocacy Group for Students on IEPs
|
|
If you are the father of a student on an IEP, you are invited to attend a meeting on Monday, Feb. 1, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the District Administration Center, to learn more about how to advocate for your child and prepare for IEP meetings. Click here to see the flyer.

Mayor Willey Delivers State of the City Address
|
|
Hillsboro Mayor Jerry Willey will deliver his annual State of the City address on Thursday, Jan. 28, at the Hillsboro Main Library, 2850 NE Brookwood Pkwy. Reception begins at 5 p.m. and the program will run from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided. RSVP online or by phone: 503-681-6139.

On Jan. 26, 1700, the West Coast experienced a Cascadia subduction zone earthquake with an estimated moment magnitude of 8.7-9.2.
The moment magnitude is used by seismologists to measure the size of earthquakes in terms of the energy released, using a calculation of the rigidity of the Earth multiplied by the average amount of slip on the fault and the size of the area that slipped. Read more on OPB.com.
