The Oldest Living Rose

Growing along the Hildesheim Cathedral of Germany is thought to be about 1,000 years old. Originally built in the 9th century, the cathedral was damaged in 1945 and reconstructed soon after the war. The oldest living rose tree is said to have been planted simultaneously with the original foundation of the church and while it was also destroyed in 1945, the roots survived and began to sprout again. The rose tree has entwined itself around the apses and continues to grow.

While this Valentine's Day you will not be gifting the Oldest Living Rose to your valentine or loved one, here is the symbolism behind each rose color:

  • Red Roses show passion and love.
  • White Roses define innocence, purity and unconditional love.
  • Yellow Roses are given as a sign of friendship and joy.
  • Pink Roses illustrate thankfulness and gentleness.
  • Black or Withered Roses symbolize love lost, depression or death.

Be sure to gift the right color flower to your special someone's this Valentine's Day!
