This Edition

This edition is just a quickie, no pictures and not many links.  It's a summary of the most recent news and a reminder of important upcoming events.

Jade Huffhines/Cystic Fibrosis

Tomorrow, Saturday, May 11, the Duck Inn in downtown Wadsworth hosts the Third Annual Jade Huffhines Fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis.

Jade was a wonderful young girl who captured everyone's heart.  My daughter Katie was fortunate to be a friend of and classmate with Jade at St. Patrick's School.  Sadly, Jade passed away in 2009 from the disease.

The event starts at 7PM so please stop by if you can.  All proceeds are donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Queens' Car Wash

Mark your calendar for Saturday, June 2nd.  The Queens are busy once again, this time washing cars in the Shanty parking lot.  Hours are from 11 AM to 2 PM.  The proceeds go to support breast cancer awareness.

And the Pink Fire Truck is expected to show up helping promote this most worthwhile cause.  You don't want to miss this.

So bring your car, a brand new 'vette or an "old beater Tyler Crittenden pickup" with mud and salt leftover from the Eisenhower days.  The Queens will make it look like royalty!

But note:  they are not responsible for loose chrome, bent antennas, ash trays, flat tires, missing mufflers, and in general, most broken and rusty items from A to Z.  However, they'll make the outside look nice!

And at least you'll be stylin' as you weave your way in your clean 'rod between the orange barricades as the construction barrage continues to plague our roadways.
Newport Fire's After the Fire Event

On April 30th, there was a house fire on Juniper Court.  The Newport Township Fire Department is hosting a "Neighborhood After the Fire Meeting" at their Caroline Avenue Fire Station on Thursday, May 30th at 7:00 p.m.  Please click HERE for more information about this event.
Farmers' Market Marches On

As you know from prior newsletters, Hope Forcier is our point guard for this summer's Market extravaganza.   Here's what's new:

 1.  We want to attract the fabulous Mirai Sweet Corn as a vendor. If you've ever had it, you know it's the best.  We need help to convince them to come.  They're in Harvard, IL on Rt. 173.  Call them at 815-943-7448 and ask them to become a vendor.  www.twingardendsfarm.com

2.  We still need all kinds of general help as well as more vendors.  Please contact Hope at [email protected]

3.  Any carpenters out there or would-be wood butchers?  We need some wooden frames to house various promotional posters.  If you can help out, please contact Hope at the above address for details or tell someone at the Village Hall.

4.  Things are coming along and looking good, but we need more of everything to make this a total knockout.

A Changing of the (Partial) Guard

On Tuesday, May 7, Ben Dolan was sworn in as a new trustee, and Geralyn Hansen and Tyler Crittenden were sworn in for a second term.  The legal honors were performed by Lake County Judge Jay Ukena of Wadsworth.

Rounding out the six current trustees include Bob Hayden, Ken Harvey (the trustee with the most tenure) and yours truly.

A resolution was prepared and read to outgoing trustee Rodney Johnson for his service to the Village.  I can personally attest to all the good things he did to make this a better place to live, but one of the most visible is Wadsworth Park.  Rod's leadership helped create the gem that it is.

Thanks Rodney.
Newsletter Production

We started this electronic newsletter quite a while ago and we're pleased with how it's going.  More and more people sign up and it's reaching more and more of our residents.

We get a lot of compliments about it, and most of those compliments come to me.  As a writer and photographer, I love the recognition.  My head gets the size of a basketball!

But, the truth be known, there's a lot more to the story.  Administrator Amidei is the background guy who helps me make this happen.  He manages the contract with the software provider, maintains the email data base and massages the hot links and photos that I send to him.  In the end, he fills any holes that I've left and then, with a click of his "send" button, puts the newsletter into your mail box.

Thanks, Moses.
Village Audit Report

The Village is pleased to announce that we have received our audit report from Milburn Cain and Company, Certified Public Accountants, and the news is great!  We received an unqualified opinion on our financial statements, the highest level of assurance that we can receive.  This opinion was made possible due to the Village's adoption of the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) Rule 34 - which requires the Village to account for all (and depreciate) capital assets, including its infrastructure.

Kudos to staff for making this happen.
