In this Issue-

We drive the same roads that you do and certainly share your misery, so the first topic is a construction update.  Not being one to sugar coat things, the downtown area will only get worse for a while.  You heard it here first.

That being so, when all is said and done and all the orange cones and barricades no longer thwart your passage, the finished projects will be magnificent. And I dare say worth waiting for.

Road Construction-

Those are two words you just love to hear these days, right?  Here's the latest news:

Wadsworth and Green Bay Roads intersection-
  • Temporary traffic signal now activated
  • Old signal equipment removed
  • Storm sewer installation has begun
  • Please visit the project's website by clicking here for more information.
Wadsworth Road downtown project-
  • Curran is in the process of finishing the installation of the new storm sewer on the south side of the road.  The sewer generally runs from east of Chicago Avenue and heads westerly where it will dump into the Des Plaines River.  Utility conflicts held this process up; Curran had to coordinate with the railroad to allow for the boring of the sewer underneath of the railroad tracks - this also took time as railroad personnel had to be onsite when this boring took place.  Curran expects to complete the storm sewer installation this coming Friday.
  • Next week Campanella and Sons will perform some excavating in the area as well as install the larger stone that is part of the road base.  This should take two days.  Mid-week, the concrete contractor will string and prep the south side of the road for the curb installation, which should take two days and hopefully be completed by Friday of next week.
  • After that, Campanella will return to the site to fine grade the road base which will allow for paving.  Curran will install a binder and surface course which will then allow them to switch traffic to the south side of the road so that the work on the north side can begin.
Hopefully, the project should be done sometime in the month of October of this year.

Delany Road south from Oak Knoll Road to Sunset Avenue-
  • You will see very little work taking place southerly of Yorkhouse Road during the next few days.  There are still utility conflicts along this corridor; these conflicts should be done by Monday of next week.  Next week, south of Yorkhouse Road, work to prep the road for paving will take place with a binder asphalt course to follow shortly thereafter.  Once this happens, traffic will be switched to the west side of the road.
  • North of Yorkhouse Road, the corridor north to Oak Knoll Road is pretty much ready for curb installation on the east side of Delany Road.  This work should begin on Friday of this week.  A (hopefully) minor utility conflict exists at the Wadsworth/Delany intersection; Wadsworth Road east and west of Delany probably will not see any curb installation until later next week; the corridor is most likely a few weeks away from any asphalt installation.
The County and Curran are still hoping that the project (north of Yorkhouse Road) will be completed by early October of this year.  As for the south project, which is southerly of Yorkhouse Road, the work will be completed next spring.

And although some of you are no doubt tired of reading this, I feel compelled to once again mention that these projects are county ones and, accordingly, the Village has no jurisdiction in them.

Keep posted to the main page of the Village's website as periodic updates of the area's road projects are uploaded to our site.  Again, thank you for your patience with these never-ending road improvement projects.
Wadsworth Queens-

On August 6, the new Wadsworth Queens presented themselves to the Village Board.  Brooke Wilt, Miss Wadsworth, described their activities in just their two months in office:
  • Attended the Gurnee and Grayslake pageants
  • Held a fund-raising car wash at the Shanty
  • Worked as volunteers at our Farmers' Market
Upcoming events include-
  • Gurnee Days parade
  • Volunteering for a multiple sclerosis benefit
  • Competing in the Lake County Pageant
For a little different look, I photographed the young women in a sepia tone, instead of the standard color shot:

On the far left is Amanda Hamann, Little Miss Wadsworth.  Her platform is Feed My Starving Children, which supports children affected by poverty and starvation.

In the center is Savannah Kolar, Junior Miss Wadsworth, whose platform is Breast Cancer Awareness.

On the far right is Miss Wadsworth, Brooke Wilt, and her platform is Eating Disorder Awareness.

I have met and worked with these talented girls and they are very special individuals.  We are so proud of them!
Farmers' Market-

Our vendors continue to feed the masses and here's what's new:

Hope's Veggies
makes its inaugural appearance on Friday and it's peppers, peppers, and more peppers. The following Friday it's tomatoes, tomatoes, and yet more tomatoes.  Tomatoes of all kinds.
And then there are her special dog treats, endorsed by none other than my own Charlie.

Patch 22
brings a corral of ponies for the kids to experience life in the Village of Country Living.

The Unnamed Veggie Vendor has a contest going to name itself.  How cool is that?  As I write this, I have no idea what the winner gets but maybe it's a bunch of veggies.  Ya think???

Their produce comes from Townline Road just off Yorkhouse and includes swiss chard, various kinds of greens, zuchinni, and other healthy stuff as it comes to harvest.

And finally,
Tote Bags and More will be selling, what else???, tote bags.  For ten bucks.  What else do you have to haul your vegetable loot home?

Farm Animals

There have been many questions of late regarding the keeping of farm animals and the related zoning regulations.

In the the SR (1 acre) and SE (2 acre) residential zoning districts, farm animals are only permitted on lots that contain more than 200,000 square feet (5 acres) in size.  Such farm animals must be kept or housed on a not-for-profit basis.

Farm animals on properties within the AG (Agriculture) zoning districts are permitted; these lots generally are greater than 5 acres in size.

From our Township Assessor-

This reminder comes from Jerome Berens, Newport Township Assessor:

"Your 2013 assessment notice was published & mailed on July 23, 2013.

"You have until August 22, 2013 to contact our office with any discrepancies, however the sooner the better.

"With some exceptions, we factored down the township another nine percent, similar to last years, for a total of eighteen percent down in the last two years!

"That's the good news. The not so good fact is that the tax rate went up a similar amount last year and will most likely do the same this year. Therefore the net taxes paid is about the same.

"This is basic algebra math, when the 15-20 individual taxing bodies on your tax bill (3/4 of your tax bill is from the schools) ask for the same or more money, and the assessment value goes down, then necessarily the tax rate has to go up.

"Clearly then our taxes are not an assessment problem but rather a levy problem from the taxing bodies.

"The 'Blue Sheet' contains a wealth of information regarding you & your property. Please read it over carefully. If you have any further questions please call our office at 847-838-6869 any Mon, Wed, or Fri from 9am to 4pm, or feel free to visit our office.

"Thank you."

Mosquito Spraying

The Village has contracted with Clarke to perform up to four Village-wide misting applications (adulticiding) to reduce the adult mosquito population during the summer.  The treatments will be coordinated with neighboring communities including the City of Zion, the Village of Beach Park, the Village of Gurnee and Warren Township.

The applications take place during early morning hours.  Adulticiding occurs between dusk and dawn and attacks adult mosquitoes with a truck-mounted application of an ultra-low-volume spray.  All insecticides used have been approved specifically for this purpose and are regulated by the EPA.  The USEPA has stated that when used according to label directions, these products pose no undue risks to humans or the environment.  Clarke will apply a synthetic pyrethroid used widely throughout the Chicago area for adult mosquito control that is labeled by the USEPA for use in residential and recreation areas.

Residents who wish to be notified prior to any adulticiding treatments should contact the toll-free Mosquito Hotline at 1.800.942.2555 and ask to be placed on the Village of Wadsworth prior notification list.
