A COURSE IN MIRACLES

CH 31 "THE SIMPLICITY OF SALVATION"
VII. "THE SAVIOR'S VISION"

75 Behold your role within the universe! To every part of true creation has the Lord of Love and Life entrusted all salvation from the misery of hell. And to each one has He allowed the grace to be a savior to the holy ones especially entrusted to his care. And this he learns when first he looks upon one brother as he looks upon himself and sees the mirror of himself in him. Thus is the concept of himself laid by, for nothing stands between his sight and what he looks upon to judge what he beholds. And in this single vision does he see the face of Christ and understands he looks on everyone as he beholds this One. For there is light where darkness was before, and now the veil is lifted from his sight.

WHAT IS THE EGO?
What is the Ego
Voice and Music by CIMS SonShip Radio

*IAMBIC PENTAMETER* Example MP3

The ego is idolatry; the sign
   of limited and separated self,
born in a body, doomed to suffer and
to end its life in death. It is the will
that sees the Will of God as enemy,
and takes a form in which It is denied.
The ego is the "proof" that strength is weak
and love is fearful, life is really death,
and what opposes God alone is true.

The ego is insane. In fear it stands
beyond the Everywhere, apart from All,
   in separation from the Infinite.
In its insanity, it thinks it has
become a victor over God Himself,
   and in its terrible autonomy
it "sees" the Will of God has been destroyed.
It dreams of punishment, and trembles at
the figures in its dreams, its "enemies"
who seek to murder it before it can
ensure its safety by attacking them.

The Son of God is egoless. What can
he know of madness and the death of God,
when he abides in Him? What can he know
of sorrow and of suffering, when he
lives in eternal joy? What can he know
of fear and punishment, of sin and guilt,
of hatred and attack, when all there is
   surrounding him is everlasting peace,
   forever conflict-free and undisturbed,
   in deepest silence and tranquility?

To know Reality is not to know
the ego and its thoughts, its works, its acts,
its laws and its beliefs, its dreams, its hopes,
its plans for its salvation, and the cost
belief in it entails. In suffering,
the price for faith in it is so immense
that crucifixion of the Son of God
is offered daily at its darkened shrine,
and blood must flow before the altar where
its sickly followers prepare to die.

Yet will one lily of forgiveness change
the darkness into light; the altar to
illusions to the shrine of Life Itself.
And peace will be restored forever to
the holy minds which God created as
His Son, His dwelling-place, His joy, His love,
completely His, completely one with Him

There is no conflict, for my will is Yours.
Voice and Music by CIMS SonShip Radio

How foolish, Father, to believe Your Son
could cause himself to suffer! Could he make
a plan for his damnation, and be left
without a certain way to his release?
You love me, Father. You could never leave
me desolate, to die within a world
of pain and cruelty. How could I think
that Love has left Itself? There is no will
except the Will of Love. Fear is a dream,
and has no will that can conflict with Yours.
Conflict is sleep, and peace awakening.
Death is illusion; life Eternal Truth.
There is no opposition to Your Will.
There is no conflict, for my will is Yours.

Forgiveness shows us that God's Will is one,
and that we share It. Let us look upon
the holy sights forgiveness shows today,
that we may find the peace of God. Amen

Lesson 331
There is no conflict, for my will is yours.

Sarah's Commentary:

This Lesson starts a new section that addresses the ego. It is interesting when we hear people talk of loving or hating their ego, when in fact, the ego is the separated self we identify with until we choose to remember who we really are. It is the self we think we are with a separate will and our own separate thoughts. Jesus tells us the ego is idolatry---meaning the worship of a false god, the false self we have come to identify as "me", which we value and think of ourselves as the central character in this illusory dream.

In the Clarification of Terms, Jesus speaks of the ego. "What is the ego? Nothingness, but in a form that seems like something. In a world of form the ego cannot be denied for it alone seems real. Yet could God's Son as He created him abide in form or in a world of form? Who ask you to define the ego and explain how it arose can be but he who thinks it real, and seeks by definition to ensure that its illusive nature is concealed behind the words that seem to make it so. " (C.2.2.1-5) "There is no definition for a lie that serves to make it true." (C.2.3.1)

The miracle "merely looks on devastation, and reminds the mind that what it sees is false." (W.PII.Q13.1.3) The miracle is the opposite to the ego, because, in the experience of the miracle, we see all that the ego appeared to be. When we ask questions of why did we separate, and how did all of this happen, we need to "Hear, then, the one answer of the Holy Spirit to all the questions the ego raises: You are a child of God, a priceless part of His Kingdom, which He created as part of Him." (T.6.IV.6.1)(ACIM OE T.6.V.50) This is the answer already in our minds.

When we identify with the ego, we see ourselves as a substitute for the Christ Self we are. It is about making a will, a self, a body, in opposition to God, and from that state we see Him as enemy. Now we fear this God we have made in our own image, as a wrathful, punishing, and jealous God the ego has convinced us is our enemy. Instead, we worship the body, which has become the substitute for the Christ Self.

It is this god the ego has made that is perceived at war with us. It is this image of God we have run away from, hiding in the body and the world where we think we are safe from his wrath. We now see God as having abandoned us to suffer and die in a cruel world. We cry out "God why have you abandoned me?" Yet, in truth, we are the ones who abandoned Him and now project our decision to leave Him onto Him. We see Him as having the almighty power, which makes us his powerless victims subject to His whims. We experience suffering and ask "God, why did you let this happen to me?" as if God is responsible for our condition. That is how the ego set it up, so our fear of God and His all-consuming love would keep us from abandoning our ego, but the ego is fear to which we have given the attributes of love. In other words, we are looking to this fear for our protection when our only protection is in God's Love.

When we identify with the body, how can we be anything but doomed to suffer and die? "The ego is the 'proof' that strength is weak and love is fearful, life is really death, and what opposes God alone is true." (W.PII.Q12.1.3) We are constantly defending ourselves against sickness, suffering and death, but it is a losing proposition. Jesus asks us to look at what we have chosen. "Would you remain within your tiny kingdom, a sorry king, a bitter ruler of all that he surveys, who looks on nothing yet who would still die to defend it?" (T.18.VIII.7.5)(ACIM OE T.18.IX.77)

It seems to us that life began when we were born in a body. It seems like life is hard, we go through a series of challenges, we are vulnerable, we suffer, and the end is death. This is the myth we all believe when we come to this world because a veil of forgetfulness has dropped across our minds. Now the body becomes the central figure in our dreaming. It is the "hero" of this dream. "There is no dream without it, nor does it exist without the dream in which it acts as if it were a person to be seen and be believed. It takes the central place in every dream, which tells the story of how it was made by other bodies, born into the world outside the body, lives a little while and dies to be united in the dust with other bodies dying like itself." (T.27.VIII.1.2-3)(ACIM OE T.27.IX.77)

The core of the ego thought system is one of having defeated God and established our own reality. Now we think we exist, but that existence is challenged when we have the experience of the holy instant from outside of this dream. When we awaken from the dream, we will see that the dream has no reality and never did. Reality is egoless. God is not part of this ego insanity, and the choice is always there in front of us. We either continue to choose the insanity of the ego or we choose to forgive, recognizing that we are wrong about everything. Every time we admit we have been mistaken in our way of perceiving, and instead choose to forgive, we are seeing a reflection of Heaven until the dream is no more.

Lesson 331 states, " There is no conflict, for my will is Yours." Our experience in this world is full of conflict, but the only conflict is within the split mind. There is a part of the mind that identifies with the ego and another part that is a reflection of the Christ. We project the thought system of strife and conflict that we hold in our wrong minds onto the world. Thus, we experience a world of conflict and conflicted relationships. It is a thought system of one or the other, which came about in the separation where it could only be God or me. Only the ego holds thoughts of conflict. In this dream, we can and do experience conflict, but the truth is there is only God's Will and we share in His Will.

God is not even aware of our experiences in this dream. The conflict we think is there is one of opposition and defiance that originated with our opposition to God. And that is the source of our authority problem, which is brought into all of our conflicts in the world. In fact, Jesus tells us, "The authority problem is still the only source of conflict, because the ego was made out of the wish of God's Son to father Him." (T.11.In.2.3)(ACIM OE T.10.1n.1.2) You could call it the self-made man where we made our own father. When looked at with perfect honesty, Jesus says we would see this. He says we never look at anything with perfect honesty and keep this thought hidden from ourselves.

That is why he unveils for us how the ego has set all of this up, and now we can look honestly at what we have seemingly done and question it all. "The more you approach the center of His thought system, the clearer the light becomes." (T.11.In.3.4)(ACIM OE T.10.II.3) It requires that we look at the darkness of the ego thought system and be willing to "Open the dark cornerstone of terror on which it rests, and bring it out into the light." (T.11.In.3.9)(ACIM OE T.10.II.3) We are not alone. The spark of love in us goes with us to light the way. We are called to, courageously and honestly, bring all conflict to the quiet Presence in our right minds, where it is healed.

"There is no will except the Will of Love." (W.331.1.6) "Fear is a dream, and has no will that can conflict with Yours. Conflict is sleep, and peace awakening." (W.331.1.7-8). In that awakening, the realization will be clear to us that "Death is illusion; life, eternal truth." (W.331.1.9) Who we are is eternal and cannot die. "Miracles enable you to heal the sick and raise the dead because you made sickness and death yourself, and can therefore abolish both." (T.1.I.24.1)(ACIM OE T.1.I.27) Jesus was the demonstration for us of the abolishment of the idea of death. He showed us it does not exist. "There is no death, but there is a belief in death." (T.3.VII.5.11)(ACIM OE T.3.IX.79)  "The world is not left by death but by truth, and truth can be known by all those for whom the Kingdom was created, and for whom it waits." (T.3.VII. 6.11)(ACIM OE T.3.IX.80)

Because we are now aware of two thought systems in our minds, the conflict in our lives may seem to increase. Life no longer seems as simple as when we listened almost exclusively to the voice of the ego. "The Lessons of the Holy Spirit" (T.6.V)(ACIM OE T.6.V.a To Have Give All To All) addressed this by saying, when we invite the Holy Spirit in we may feel tremendous conflict because now it seems we are going in two different directions. Do we choose the ego or the Holy Spirit? We are now aware, we have two options to choose from. Now when we attack, we feel more pain because increasingly we see that our judgments and attacks on others only bring more guilt and pain into our minds. We think we should forgive, yet we hold onto our determination to pay someone back for what they have done to us. These are examples of the kinds of conflict he is talking about in this Lesson. It makes us despair that we will never achieve our spiritual goal, but despair is only of the ego. The Holy Spirit is certain and Jesus assures us of our awakening when we increasingly learn to listen only to the right mind.

When we are in conflict with anyone, we are given an opportunity to see our separate will striving to establish itself. Conflict can thus offer us an opportunity to see the unreality of our own will. My will is unreal and thus has no real power except in the dream. To be in conflict with "another" will, which is unreal and powerless, is like shadow boxing with ourselves. Oh yes, to us it seems like something real is happening, but, in fact, if we are One and there is no separation, then we share the same will, which is One with God. This Will cannot be in conflict with itself, so all seeming conflict in the world is about nothing. It is all part of the dream. There is no one to be in conflict with because we are One. We are our brother. There is no separation. Forgiveness brings about the realization that our Will is one with God. Through vigilance on behalf of the truth, we come to realize who we are---the Son of God. "Conflict is sleep, and peace awakening." (W.331.1.8)

I remember clearly as a young child about 5 years of age, living in Sweden in a refugee camp, deciding I was on my own and had to look after myself, as I felt very vulnerable and believed there was no one who could protect me. I made a decision to rely on myself rather than God, even though I did not realize, at the time, that this was what I was doing. I became very independent, very strategic and very political, believing my success in the world was up to me. It was me against the world. What a relief to realize through this work that I can give up this fight with God. He tells us it is simply foolish to believe we can oppose God's Will. It is foolish to think I could have done anything to corrupt or change myself in any way. This new awareness has helped me to relax and to go with the flow, recognizing all things truly do work together for our good.

There is value in everything that seems to be happening to us, as it can all be used to help us in our own awakening if we use every situation for that purpose. Imagine if we looked at every situation and every person with holy sight---with the eyes of Christ---and saw only innocence. That is what forgiveness would show us. We would see only the holy. We would see only God's Will for us. We would see our brother is our Self, and there is no separation. We are the same Self. We would not try to interfere with anyone's classroom, thinking we knew what others needed. Nor would we correct anyone's ego, but only work to accept the Correction for ourselves.

If we truly want to know the Self that we are, we need to look at the patterns in our lives, how we defeat ourselves, and how we attract that which we are running away from in ourselves. It is important not to fight the ego, nor to indulge it or love it. We are merely asked to look at it and be willing to take full responsibility for it, rather than projecting blame onto others. This takes courage. We tend to live in the upper rooms of our home, denying what is in the basement. We don't want to acknowledge our own shadow. We prefer to see it in others. Now we are asked to look in the dark corners where we have closed the doors tight and placed sentinels outside of these doors to guard these rooms and keep us from investigating what is in them. This journey requires us to look there and bring our defenses to the light, even though the process brings up a lot of fear. Jesus assures us, we never go there alone.

We believe we separated from God in that tiny tick of time when the Son of God remembered not to laugh at the foolishness of separating from Love and of establishing a separate will. We need not continue to take ourselves so seriously, but simply to smile at the foolishness of our thoughts and give them over. That is what the forgiveness process is about. It is to look at ourselves without judgment. That is what Jesus is helping us to do. Even in the Gospel of John, he said he would never leave us desolate. Here too, in this Lesson, "You could never leave me desolate, to die within a world of pain and cruelty." (W.331.1.4)

We need not be afraid of the ego. It is nothing, but it seems to us to have a lot of power. The only power it has is what we give it. Have you ever had the experience of keeping a shameful secret that has tormented you and controlled you, and there was a lot of fear you would be found out? Then, when you finally opened the door to that dark secret room in your mind and allowed the light to shine in, all the shame and all the power it contained was gone. It never had any power to control you, except for your belief that it had to be hidden and defended.

How do we discover what we are hiding? Sometimes, we don't even know what is there, but we can see it in our projections. When we 'hate' something about someone else, we can use this projection as an opportunity to look at some version of that same thing we hate about ourselves. Unmasking the ego is what this process is about. It is the only way to our own healing. The ego is all about fear and is the shadow that has been running the show. We try everything to keep ourselves safe and guarded from discovering the love we are. It is our investment in our defenses. Now, we need to look at our ego strategies and surrender them, but we don't need to purify ourselves. That must be done from outside of our own belief system. We leave it to the Holy Spirit and just do our part.

Allow all conflict you feel within yourself, or with anyone else, to be brought to the light of your awareness. Realize, in experiencing this conflict in yourself, it is your false will. Whenever you are feeling fearful, guilty, hopeless, unworthy, ashamed, disappointed, sad, depressed, angry, unloving, in conflict with anyone, or out of accord with yourself in any way, remind yourself "There is no conflict, for my will is Yours." (W.331.1.11)

That is the truth, but it is not about covering over the feelings that are there. Those have to be acknowledged, explored, investigated, felt, expressed and released. The ego's strategy is to try to resolve it, but that puts the ego in the forefront. The Holy Spirit's answer is to release it. It does not matter how long it takes, because this is what time is for. Any conflict we feel is simply not the truth of who we are. The truth is that the Son of God cannot suffer. The will we have identified with is nothing but fear. It will simply vanish with our awakening to the truth of who we are.

Love and blessings, Sarah

Chapter Thirty-One

VII. The Savior's Vision

68 Learning is change. Salvation does not seek to use a means as yet too alien to your thinking to be helpful nor to make the kinds of change you could not recognize. Concepts are needed while perception lasts, and changing concepts is salvation's task. For it must deal in contrasts, not in truth, which has no opposite and cannot change. In this world's concepts are the guilty "bad;" the "good" are innocent. And no one here but holds a concept of himself in which he counts the "good" to pardon him the "bad." Nor does he trust the "good" in anyone, believing that the "bad" must lurk behind. This concept emphasizes treachery, and trust becomes impossible. Nor could it change while you perceive the "bad" in you.

69 You could not recognize your "evil" thoughts as long as you see value in attack. You will perceive them sometimes, but will not see them as meaningless. And so they come in fearful form, with content still concealed, to shake your sorry concept of yourself and blacken it with still another "crime." You cannot give yourself your innocence, for you are too confused about yourself. But should one brother dawn upon your sight as wholly worthy of forgiveness, then your concept of yourself is wholly changed . Your "evil" thoughts have been forgiven with his, because you let them all affect you not. No longer did you choose that you should be the sign of evil and of guilt in him. And as you gave your trust to what is good in him, you gave it to the good in you.

70 In terms of concepts, it is thus you see him more than just a body, for the good is never what the body seems to be. The actions of the body are perceived as coming from the "baser" part of you and thus of him as well. By focusing upon the good in him, the body grows decreasingly persistent in your sight and will at length be seen as little more than just a shadow circling round the good. And this will be your concept of yourself, when you have reached the world beyond the sight your eyes alone can offer you to see. For you will not interpret what you see without the Aid that God has given you. And in His sight there is another world.

71 You live in that world just as much as this. For both are concepts of yourself which can be interchanged, but never jointly held. The contrast is far greater than you think, for you will love this concept of yourself because it was not made for you alone. Born as a gift for someone not perceived to be yourself, it has been given you. For your forgiveness, offered unto him, has been accepted now for both of you.

72 Have faith in him who walks with you, so that your fearful concept of yourself may change. And look upon the good in him that you may not be frightened by your "evil" thoughts because they do not cloud your view of him. And all this shift requires is that you be willing that this happy change occur. No more than this is asked. On its behalf, remember what the concept of yourself which now you hold has brought you in its wake, and welcome the glad contrast offered you. Hold out your hand that you may have the gift of kind forgiveness which you offer one whose need for it is just the same as yours. And let the cruel concept of yourself be changed to one which brings the peace of God.

73 The concept of yourself which now you hold would guarantee your function here remain forever unaccomplished and undone. And thus it dooms you to a bitter sense of deep depression and futility. Yet it need not be fixed unless you choose to hold it past the hope of change and keep it static and concealed within your mind. Give it instead to Him Who understands the changes that it needs to let it serve the function given you to bring you peace that you may offer peace to have it yours. Alternatives are in your mind to use, and you can see yourself another way. Would you not rather look upon yourself as needed for salvation of the world instead of as salvation's enemy?

74 The concept of the self stands like a shield, a silent barricade before the truth, and hides it from your sight. All things you see are images because you look on them as through a barrier which dims your sight and warps your vision, so that you behold nothing with clarity. The light is kept from everything you see. At most, you glimpse a shadow of what lies beyond. At least, you merely look on darkness and perceive the terrified imaginings that come from guilty thoughts and concepts born of fear. And what you see is hell, for fear is hell. All that is given you is for release-the sight, the vision, and the inner Guide all lead you out of hell with those you love beside you and the universe with them.

76 The veil across the face of Christ, the fear of God and of salvation, and the love of guilt and death, they all are different names for just one error-that there is a space between you and your brother, kept apart by an illusion of yourself which holds him off from you and you away from him. The sword of judgment is the weapon which you give to the illusion of yourself that it may fight to keep the space that holds your brother off unoccupied by love. Yet while you hold this sword, you must perceive the body as yourself, for you are bound to separation from the sight of him who holds the mirror to another view of what he is and thus what you must be.

77 What is temptation but the wish to stay in hell and misery? And what could this give rise to but an image of yourself that can be miserable and remain in hell and torment? Who has learned to see his brother not as this has saved himself, and thus is he a savior to the rest. To everyone has God entrusted all, because a partial savior would be one who is but partly saved. The holy ones whom God has given each of you to save are everyone you meet or look upon, not knowing who they are, all those you saw an instant and forgot, and those you knew a long while since, and those you will yet meet, the unremembered and the not yet born. For God has given you His Son to save from every concept that he ever held.

78 Yet while you wish to stay in hell, how could you be the savior of the Son of God? How would you know his holiness while you see him apart from yours? For holiness is seen through holy eyes that look upon the innocence within and thus expect to see it everywhere. And so they call it forth in everyone they look upon that he may be what they expect of him. This is the savior's vision-that he see his innocence in all he looks upon and sees his own salvation everywhere. He holds no concept of himself between his calm and open eyes and what he sees. He brings the light to what he looks upon, that he may see it as it really is.

79 Whatever form temptation seems to take, it always but reflects a wish to be a self which you are not. And from that wish, a concept rises, teaching that you are the thing you wish to be. It will remain your concept of yourself until the wish that fathered it no longer is held dear. But while you cherish it, you will behold your brother in the likeness of the self whose image has the wish begot of you. For vision can but represent a wish, because it has no power to create. Yet it can look with love or look with hate, depending only on the simple choice of whether you would join with what you see or keep yourself apart and separate.

80 The savior's vision is as innocent of what your brother is as it is free of any judgment made upon yourself. It sees no past in anyone at all. And thus it serves a wholly open mind, unclouded by old concepts and prepared to look on only what the present holds. It cannot judge because it does not know. And recognizing this, it merely asks, "What is the meaning of what I behold?" Then is the answer given. And the door held open for the face of Christ to shine upon the one who asks in innocence to see beyond the veil of old ideas and ancient concepts held so long and dear against the vision of the Christ in you.

81 Be vigilant against temptation, then, remembering that it is but a wish, insane and meaningless, to make yourself a thing which you are not. And think as well upon the thing that you would be instead. It is a thing of madness, pain, and death; a thing of treachery and black despair, of failing dreams and no remaining hope except to die and end the dream of fear. This is temptation, nothing more than this. Can this be difficult to choose against? Consider what temptation is, and see the real alternatives you choose between. There are but two. Be not deceived by what appears as many choices. There is hell or Heaven, and of these you choose but one.

82 Let not the world's light, given unto you, be hidden from the world. It needs the light, for it is dark indeed, and men despair because the savior's vision is withheld, and what they see is death. Their savior stands, unknowing and unknown, beholding them with eyes unopened. And they cannot see until he looks on them with seeing eyes and offers them forgiveness with his own. Can you to whom God says, "Release My Son!" be tempted not to listen when you learn that it is you for whom He asks release? And what but this is what this course would teach? And what but this is there for you to learn?
