From the Editor-

Yes, it's been a while since the last newsletter but what can I say?  The snow and cold got to me, perhaps like you.  I know it's a feeble excuse but it's the only one I have. Anyway, we'll get you up-to-date on several Village matters.

The Illinois Sheriff's Association is offering 106 scholarships to students wishing to pursue higher education.  Their press release with all the details is reprinted below.  In these times of outrageous tuition costs and declining household incomes, every little bit can help.

Concerned about the quality of your well water?  We've drafted a paragraph below that explains how you can get it tested for just a few bucks.

Work on the draft Comprehensive Plan continues as we hold public meetings and solicit comments for improvement of the draft.  Details on how you can comment are provided below.

A new Tracy's Bistro is headed for our Village and you can read about it below.  Print out the coupon for some discounts at the Winthrop Harbor Tracy's.

You can also find information about voting early for the March primary and an available newsletter from the Lake County Health Department.

Sheriff's Association Scholarship-

The Illinois Sheriff's Association announced that it will be awarding 106 scholarships throughout the State of Illinois to students wishing to pursue higher education during the 2014-2015 academic year.  The scholarships are to be applied to tuition, books, and fees only.  The student must be enrolled full-time at a certified institution of higher learning within the State of Illinois.

Sheriff Mark Curran, Lake County, announces he will be awarding one (1) scholarship in the amount of $500 (five hundred dollars).  There will be no restriction on any applicant by reason of race, age, creed, color, sex or national origin.  The only limitations are as follows:

Applicants must be permanent Lake County residents.

Scholarships must be utilized at institutions of higher learning within the State of Illinois

Students must be enrolled as a full-time student during the 2014-2015 school year (excluding summer session).

Applications are now available at the Lake County Sheriff's Office located at 25 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave, Waukegan, IL 60085, the Lake County Sheriff's Office Facebook Page and the Lake County Sheriff's Office Website.

Students must complete the application, answer the essay question and return all documentation to the Lake County Sheriff's Office by March 15, 2014 (must be postmarked by this date).

In addition to the 106 scholarships awarded, 7 Peacekeeper Scholarships will also be awarded.  A separate application is required for this award and is also available at the Lake County Sheriff's Office, on their Facebook page and website.

For more information, please contact the Lake County Sheriff's Office, Illinois Sheriff's Association, high school advising center or college financial aid office.

Ground Water Testing Kits-

Since many of you rely on well water for your household needs it's important that you have it checked annually to see if it meets the minimum Lake County drinking water standards.

In observance of National Groundwater Testing Week in March, the county health department is offering reduced rates for testing your water.  Between March 3 and March 13 you can bring your water sample to 500 W. Winchester Road in Libertyville and pay a reduced fee of $10 to have it tested.

Kits can be mailed to you from the health department for $12 or picked up at our Village Hall for no charge.  Bring the bottle of your well water, the completed form that comes with the bottle, and the ten bucks to the Winchester Road address above. For all information relating to this matter call 847-377-8020.

Comprehensive Plan Update-

Review and comment continues on the draft Comprehensive Plan.  All residents were sent a postcard in the mail with details of scheduled meetings and where to find a copy.  One public meeting has already been held.  A second public meeting (open house format) will be Thursday, February 20, (tomorrow) at 6PM in the Village Hall. Written and emailed comments have already been sent to the Village Hall.

We WANT your thoughts, comments, criticisms, likes and dislikes.  This plan is merely a vision for the future, a collection of ideas and suggestions on how the Village MIGHT look in ten years.  Your input will help shape that plan.

Future public hearings will be held at the Prairie Trail School on March 6 and April 3 at 6PM.

Tracy's Bistro Is Coming to Wadsworth-

Planning continues for a new Tracy's Bistro for Wadsworth.  It will be located between the Dunkin' Donuts and the Shell Station on the corner of Rts. 41 and 173.

Tracy's is an upscale restaurant concept (21 and over) featuring sandwiches, wine, and other beverages along with video gaming in a pleasant atmosphere and will be wi-fi ready in case you just want to hang out with your laptop.

For a preliminary view, visit their other new facility at 1275 Sheridan Road, Winthrop Harbor.  If you like free stuff, this coupon entitles you to a free doughnut with a purchase of coffee and a dollar off the cost of any sandwich.

I actually checked out the Harbor facility on their opening day and watched a guy win $500 while I ate a sandwich, watching the slot machine dials whirl and whirl looking for a winner. Very cool place.
Want to Vote Early?-

Information Courtesy of the Lake County Clerk's Office

The Lake County Clerk's office is most grateful to Benton Township and The Village Hall of Wadsworth for their long partnerships in facilitating early voting at their offices.  New state laws continue to increase requirements and associated costs for voting.  In an effort to minimize the financial burden to taxpayers, a number of early voting sites have been combined and relocated to better serve with fewer sites.

Beginning with the March 2014 primary, early voters in Benton and Newport Townships will be served at the Zion City Hall, 2828 Sheridan Rd., Zion. Early voting sites are open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. starting Monday, March 3 until Saturday, March 15.

The convenient in-person early voting option is available to all registered voters. State law requires early voters to present a current, government-issued photo ID before receiving a ballot.

Any voter can request a ballot by mail online without signing a separate paper ballot request at www.LakeVoterPower.info or may complete a printable form online to sign and mail to Lake County Clerk, 18 North County St., Rm. 101, Waukegan, IL 60085. For more information, call 847/377-2406.
