In this issue-

This is a short issue to remind you about the Village's Halloween day and hours and also to present a summary of the Freedom Farm for Vets fall farm festival which was held this past Sunday.

The next newsletter will be published on or around November 1 and will bring you up to date on several other Village matters and happenings.

As always, let me know if you have questions, concerns, or suggestions for future editions.

Trick or Treat!  (When do we eat?)

Trick or Treat hours in our village are this Saturday, October 31 from 2pm to 5.  Note this is a change from prior years... usually it's on a Sunday here but this year it's Saturday.

A little bit of some local history.  I grew up in Waukegan on the southwest side amid a lot of brand new subdivisions with lots of kids.  We had something in addition to the regular treat or treating night:  it was called "Beggar's Night." Trick or treating was allowed on the night before (it was always in the dark, never during the light of the day) in addition to the regular night so we kids got a two-for-one deal.

Each evening, we'd fill up a shopping bag with candy, popcorn balls, an occasional dime, and assorted other stuff.  I always tried to trade the apple that some health-conscious mom quietly dropped into my bag to my brother John for something *better* but I don't remember any successful transactions with him.

Remember PEZ and the little pocket dispenser it came with? I wanted to unload that stuff, too.

In case you're wondering, this was in the middle to late '50s. My, oh my, how times have changed.

Enjoy this year's event.  Have fun with our children as they shout the traditional command of the day. Enjoy their wild and crazy costumes.

As a post-script, I didn't trade away the #2 pencils from my loot;  I always wanted to be a writer but that never changed.
Freedom Farm for Vets-

Many of you know that Wadsworth has its own Freedom Farm for Vets located between Wadsworth and Beach Roads just west of Green Bay Road.

The Farm is a recognized charity under Sec. 501(C) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code and provides assistance and support to vets (and their families) who suffer from PTSD and other combat maladies. It does this in the setting of a low stress, working farm environment with crops and animals.

This past Sunday the organization held its "Fall Farm Festival" and what a nice event it was.

It was a family affair with many activities for kids including face painting, pumpkin painting, balloon art, and other activities for children and adults alike.

It was a glorious day weather-wise and when kids are having fun, everybody has fun.

Former United States Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10) was on hand to help dedicate three new outbuildings which were donated by Home Depot.

Our Freedom Farm does wonderful work to help many veterans who are deserving of the best we can give and it is funded by charitable donations.  To find out more about the organization, click HERE.
