The Village will once again host the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony and we're adding something new in response to residents' requests: an outside winter event. The details are below.

We introduce you to the Newport Township Historical Society and its next-door retailer, The Treasure Depot.

And finally, everyone is asking what's up with the Shanty's expansion plans.  We know what they are!
As always, let me know what you think or what you want to see in future newsletters.

Kids, parents, grandparents:  Come one, come all!

Something new, a winter event!

The success of our September "Concert in the Park" event prompted suggestions from residents to have a fun event during the winter.  We scratched our heads and came up with this:  A bonfire with your discarded Christmas trees!

Look at it this way:  As mentioned in the above paragraph, in December we'll light up ONE tree.  In January, we'll light them ALL up!

We are working on a plan on how best to collect your old coniferous seasonal trees and once the logistics are figured out, we'll let you know.  But here's a heads-up on what we're planning:

Date:  Saturday, January 16, 5:30pm
Where:  Village Hall
What:  A big bonfire
Food:  Savanna House food and beverage
For kids:  Sled hill will be open
Contest:  Coolest winter hats for kids
Who:  This is a family event and you can bring your              relatives and friends to help make it a big                    winter party

Mark your calendar and stay tuned for more information.  We will have mechanisms for you to drop off your trees and also for us to pick them up from your yard for your convenience.  We want to make sure we accumulate enough "inventory" before the disposal companies grab them before us.

Based on the huge turnout for the concert bonfire engineered by Michael Bennett, our residents love a big fire so that's what we'll have.  If you want to roast marshmallows to make s'mores, you'll probably need a 100 foot stick.

Our historical society-

The Newport Township Historical Society has a wealth of interesting information about our community and its history.  Several photos from the early years can be seen on the organization's Facebook page which you might want to check out.

They are located in our downtown at 15155 Wadsworth Road.

The Society is a not-for-profit organization which collects, protects, preserves, and presents any information about the history Newport Township. The Township includes parts of Wadsworth, Old Mill Creek, Russell, Rosecrans, and Milburn.

Click HERE to see documents about Abraham Lincoln's visit to our area.

If you are interested to become a member or have something to contribute, contact Shawn Ford at 847-553-1185 or email [email protected].

The Treasure Depot-

You can find a little more of Wadsworth history next door to the Historical Society at the Treasure Depot, an antique and collectibles resale shop.

Run by LaurieMarie, store hours are Thursday through Saturday from 10am to 3pm and on Sunday from 10am to 1pm but might vary seasonally.  To check on current hours, she can be reached at 847-650-2917 or [email protected].

There's lots of interesting stuff inside.  Daughter Katie and I stopped in last summer and purchased a couple of things, including an old cast iron dutch oven which I use to make "Jimbo's World Infamous Baked Beans."

Okay, so the place has something for everybody...

What's Up with the Shanty?

It seems like just about everyone knows the Shanty bought the old Mobil station next door and have heard the restaurant plans to expand.  But what are those plans and why is it taking so long?

You won't want to miss the next Newsletter. In it will be my exclusive one-on-one interview with owner Dimitri Kallianis.  You will see what the plans are as well as the significant hurdles that had to be overcome to get this far.  I'll weave in some family history in order for you to get to know him better as well as his brother George and sister Nota.

We'll tantalize you with a taste of future menu items and might even have a contest of some sort.

One of the focuses of this Newsletter from the start has been to promote the businesses of our village's retailers because sales tax is the most important and significant source of revenue that we have to fund Village operations.

If you'd like to get a start on the family history, click HERE.  A couple of years ago I wrote a magazine piece for MidWest Outdoors on Dino, Dimitri's father.  He is a fascinating man with a most interesting history who embodies the spirit of dedication and hard work. I hope you enjoy it.
