CHICAGO INNOVATION AWARD-WINNERS FEATURED IN CRAIN'S 

Abbott ( Elaine Leavenworth (2000) and Heather Mason (2015)) and Aon ( Cary Grace (2014)) were among this year's winners at the Chicago Innovation Awards. Abbott was recognized for MitraClip, a tiny heart-valve device that prevents irregular blood flow. Aon was recognized for their Active Health Exchange, the industry's first private exchange built for large corporations. The Chicago Innovation Awards celebrated two dozen companies for inventive products and services. This year's winners were culled from 535 nominations, which were narrowed down by 12 judges to 100 in September and then 10 finalists for the main award and 10 in the Up-and-Comer category, as well as special citations including the 2015 People's Choice Award. Along with this recognition, winners will get a chance for group meetings with Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Gov. ADVOCATE, AETNA CREATE OBAMACARE EXCHANGE PLAN

TCN MEMBER HOSPITALS RECEIVE "A" RANKING FROM LEAPFROG GROUP 

Leapfrog Group, a Washington D.C.-based nonprofit, graded 2,530 hospitals across the country on 28 safety measures in its biannual Hospital Safety Scores. The study analyzed safety issues including foreign objects left in the body and infections contracted while admitted. Several Advocate hospitals (Gail D. Hasbrouck (2004)), Rush University Medical Center (Anne Murphy (2012)) and the University of Chicago Medical Center (Sharon O'Keefe (2015)) were among 18 hospitals in the state to receive a straight-A ranking, indicating the hospital has received A's since Leapfrog started the ranking. MARIANJOY REHABILITATION HOSPITAL TO JOIN NORTHWESTERN MEDICINE
Northwestern Memorial HealthCare (NMHC) and the Wheaton Franciscan Sisters recently announced that Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital (Kathleen C. Yosko (1993)), a 127-bed nonprofit rehabilitation and teaching hospital, is expected to become a member of Northwestern Medicine in 2016. NMHC and Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare have signed a Letter of Intent to finalize the terms of the transfer, which is subject to corporate and regulatory approvals. Read more...

The New Venture Challenge, which marks its 20th anniversary this year, has helped turn student start-ups into thriving companies at Chicago Booth ( Ellen Rudnick (1984)). Recently, finalist teams presented their business plans in front of a panel of judges and the winner walked away with a $70,000 cash prize. It was the culmination of the annual New Venture Challenge program, for which Ellen Rudnick, clinical professor of entrepreneurship and executive director of the Polsky Center, teaches one of the sections. Carol Ross Barney (1986), President of r-barc, the lead design architect of the Chicago Riverwalk, as well as the new Oklahoma City Federal Building, will be honored with the AIA Illinois Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Architecture at a reception on November 4, hosted by AIA Illinois, at Ross Barney Architects on West Hubbard Street. Her work, says AIA, "has made lasting and meaningful improvements to our collective quality of life, as well as women's role in the profession." Read more...

GOVERNORS STATE ATHLETICS ACCEPTED INTO CHICAGOLAND COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE  
The Governors State University Athletics program ( Elaine Maimon (2008)) has been accepted for membership in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The CCAC is one of 24 National Association of Intercollegiate Association conferences, with a membership of colleges and universities in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Wisconsin. GSU becomes one of the few public institutions, and the only public institution in the State of Illinois, in CCAC's portfolio.
