Meet Our 2016 Boston Marathon Runners
Morgan was encouraged to take up running as a way to manage her type 1 diabetes  by a close friend and mentor. She recognizes that she would not be where she is in life without amazing people who have mentored and supported her. Morgan is excited to join in Silver Lining Mentoring's work to offer mentoring relationships to youth in foster care.

Branden found himself in a number of foster homes as a child where he was separated from his four siblings and shuffled through a number of school districts.  It wasn't until he found stability in his final foster home and met strong mentors that he was able to prepare for and seize so many life altering opportunities.
Elisa has been a runner since middle school, but when she suffered her first multiple sclerosis attack, she was numb from the waist down and lost the ability to walk.  She slowly learned to walk again, and eventually to run.  All of this would not have been possible without the people in her life.  Elisa reflects that it is so hard to ask for help and we feel strong when we can do things by ourselves, but learning to ask for help brings a whole different level of strength.

Natasha knows firsthand how relevant Silver Lining Mentoring's mission is, as she grew up in a family that took in foster children. Natasha is Chair of Silver Lining Mentoring's Board of Ambassadors and ran the 2015 Boston Marathon for Silver Lining Mentoring.

Silver Lining Mentoring thanks  John Hancock Boston Marathon Non-Profit Program for our four bibs for the 2016 Boston Marathon!

What We're Watching This Month
At Silver Lining Mentoring, one of our values is cultural responsiveness. We believe that diversity strengthens communities and we are committed to listening and responding to all voices to promote respect, compassion, and social change.  Each month, one of our Staff Members shares a resource about cultural responsiveness and our entire Staff meets together to discuss. We look forward to sharing our cultural responsiveness pieces with you in the months ahead.

This month, we watched "Bird Like Me," a satirical clip from The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.  "Bird Like Me" shares the story of Turkey Creek, a historically-black town in Mississippi which has faced incredible challenges due their lack of political power and influence.  At Silver Lining Mentoring, we know that youth in foster care face similar challenges in having their concerns and challenges heard and addressed.  We are dedicated to advocating for them by sharing the issues that affect them as they navigate the world.
