Essay Competition for
Mountain Gap 5th - 8th Graders


As part of Mountain Gap's 50th Anniversary Celebration, Mountain Gap PTA is sponsoring an essay contest for all interested 5th - 8th grade students.  The theme will be "Mountain Gap School has enjoyed 50 years of excellence in learning because...."  The essay should be one page maximum in Times New Roman 12 point font with a one inch margin all around. Students should write their names on the back of the essay along with homeroom teacher and grade.

The deadline is Wednesday, January 20th.  All essays may be turned in at the Welcome Center in the provided box.
 
Outside judges will select the top three essays per grade level for certificate recognition at the February PTA General Meeting.  The first place essay in each grade level will receive a ribbon along with a small prize at the February PTA General Meeting.  Additionally, the students with the top essay per grade level will be given the opportunity to read their essay at the 50th Anniversary Celebration Program and Reception.

HCS Annual Proof of Residency Campaign

A LL  residents who have a child(ren) attending a Huntsville City School (except PreK and Seniors) are required to provide Proof of Residence on an annual basis. This annual requirement will help ensure that students are attending their zoned school.

Proof of Residence will be accepted at the student's Current Enrolled School (in person, through email of sent with your child)
 

Parents/Guardians who OWN their home are requested to provide current utility, cable or land line phone bill.
 
Parents/Guardians who RENT/LEASE their home are requested to provide current utility, cable or land line phone bill.
 
Parents/Guardians who  SHARE RESIDENCE  are requested to complete a Shared Residence  Affidavit , provide homeowner's/lease holder's current utility, cable or land line phone bill, and parent must provide an official document (auto, life or health insurance statement, current pay check pay stub, letter from an approved government agency, etc.) addressed to them at that address.

Tutoring Thursdays

National Junior Honor Society will be sponsoring Tutoring Thursdays beginning January 14 through April 28. Students in any grade are welcome to come to Mrs. Graham's class (room 207 on the eighth grade hall) from 3-4:30 PM for help with school work or a place to study. This academic support is being offered as a community service project by NJHS. Students who attend are welcome to bring snacks, and they need to have transportation home at 4:30 PM.

Stop by the Kindness Tree outside the lower school cafeteria and write your answer on a post-it note. You don't need to write your name, just what you can do to spread kindness and keep our school a safe and happy place to be.

Please ask the cashier to scan your card every time you shop your local Publix. For every $37,500 spent cumulatively by our school's participants, Publix will award our PTA $250. You may check the board at customer service for our quarterly cumulative total.

MGS P-8 Students of the Month


The Mountain Gap student of the month is chosen based on qualities such as character, leadership, and citizenship, not necessarily academics. The student of the month must be a diligent student, completing his/her assignments on time, showing strong effort to learn the subjects. The student of the month demonstrates excellent behavior inside and outside the classroom, is well mannered, and respectful to both peers and teachers.  Lastly, the student of the month shows exemplar character through his/her compassion, honesty, trustworthiness, responsibility, optimism, and loyalty in creating a positive school environment.
 
A student can only be awarded once a year. One girl and one boy from each grade will be selected each month.

Middle School Soccer League (MSSL)

Come out and support the Mtn. Gap Soccer Teams, we have a total of three teams this season (GIRLS, BOYS & COED).
 
The 2016 Season begins  January 19th and will end on  March 18th.  Games are played  on TuesdayThursday and  Saturday.

CITY WIDE PHYSICAL EXAMS

It's that time of year again! It's time for the bi-annual pre-participation Physical Evaluation for all athletes who are entering into the 7th grade or are 12 years-old and older. Huntsville Hospital Sports Center, along with the sports medicine physicians of TOC Sports, offer sports medicine coverage for area schools and gladly provide these annual screenings.

Huntsville Hospital Sports Center and TOC Sports are offering physical evaluations for your athlete SATURDAY JANUARY 9th from 8:00AM-10:00AM at the D-1 Sports Training Facility in Jones Valley.

The cost of the exam in ONLY $10 per athlete, with all proceeds benefiting the Boys and Girls Club of Huntsville.
