ELC hosts listening sessions with Black girls on school climate
ELC held its first listening sessions in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh focused on Black girls' experiences with school discipline. Their insights are a key component of ELC's work focused on crafting gender-responsive, race-positive, trauma-informed policy. This bolsters ELC's larger policy goals to create a positive school climate and reduce the use of exclusionary discipline which disproportionately impacts students of color.
Save the date! Restoring the Promise to Black Girls: A Conversation with Monique Morris on School Pushout
Join ELC in Pittsburgh on March 9th for a conversation with Dr. Monique W. Morris, author of "Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools" and cofounder of the National Black Women's Justice Institute. As part of ELC's continued work to create positive school climates where students can learn free of exclusionary discipline and discriminatory practices, this conversation will focus on Dr. Morris' new book, and the challenges Black girls face in public schools - from inappropriate pushout policies and practices, to barriers to academic achievement. We are hosting a similar event with Dr. Morris in Philadelphia on April 4th.
ELC talks school-based law enforcement at White House
Executive Director Deborah Gordon Klehr participated in a meeting at the White House focused on the misuse and overuse of school resource officers. 
Leadership of Phila. Bar supports school funding lawsuit
In an Op-Ed in The Philadelphia Inquirer, the Chancellor, Chancellor-Elect and Vice Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association called on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to hear our school funding case and to consider the ramifications of Pennsylvania's inadequate and inequitable funding system.
ELC highlights risks to student health with Sen. Vince Hughes
Earlier this month, leaders from across Pennsylvania gathered to talk about the dangers of aging schools in Philadelphia. ELC Senior Staff Attorney Maura McInerney talked about lead and other risks to student health as a result of the continued underfunding of schools in Pennsylvania. The meeting was hosted at a school that had a boiler accident earlier this year which left a school employee in a coma.
ELC attorneys present at Education Funding Forums in  Philadelphia and Pittsburgh
ELC Executive Director Deborah Gordon Klehr and Staff Attorney Cheryl Kleiman presented at forums hosted by the Education Policy and Leadership Center in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. These policy forums served as early opportunities for stakeholders to get up-to-date information about what is in the proposed education budget and the impact on children and schools of the current budget impasse.
ELC: Recent PA Supreme Court decision more evidence that state's funding scheme is "fundamentally flawed"
Executive Director Deborah Gordon Klehr released a statement following this month's Supreme Court decision rolling back powers of Philadelphia's School Reform Commission. She called the decision "the latest in a long line of developments showing that Pennsylvania's education funding system is fundamentally flawed and fails to provide our children with the resources they need."
