Two Free Online Resources for Parents of Children with LD or ADHD
When you have a child who has been diagnosed with a Learning Disability and/or ADHD, it is good to learn as much as you can about the diagnosis. But, it can be a challenge to find reliable information and overwhelming to even know where to begin. This is why Foothills Academy Society has developed two free online resources for parents.

Our newest offering is the ADHD 101 for Parents workshop, featuring Dr. Karen MacMillan (registered psychologist and our co-ED) which is  a free nine-part interactive workshop that aims to help inform parents about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), examine it’s impact on families and provide awareness about a range of supports that exist to support young people with ADHD.

This course aims to empower families and professionals assisting young people with ADHD. We dispel the most common misconceptions about ADHD in young people and provide participants with evidence-based interventions, advice on medication and guiding principles that will provide the most effective supports for your young person.

We are also now offering our LD Online for Parents for free. This  Parent Online LD Workshop  incorporates video clips and short readings.

Topics covered include:
* General overview of learning disabilities
* Organization tricks to use at home
* Homework tips
* How to make transitions go more smoothly
* Memory tricks
* Listening strategies for your child
* Assistive technology
* Encouragement strategies to keep kids motivated

What is your child doing this summer? Check out Camp Amicus!

Camp Amicus  is a unique summer camp program designed specifically for children and youth with learning disabilities and/or ADHD. Our goal is to create a rewarding and successful summer camp for each child/youth. We provide a structured and supportive environment for children to learn social skills, build relationships and have fun! Mature, caring counsellors plan activities to ensure that campers build confidence and self-esteem while enjoying a true camp experience. We offer both overnight and daycamp options. We offer overnight camp in Nordegg, AB with transportation provided from Calgary and Red Deer. And, for those who prefer to stay closer to home, we offer day camp based out of our Foothills Academy location.

All Camp Amicus programs qualify for FSCD funding. Financial assistance is also available on a sliding scale basis thanks to generosity of donors. Contact CSIntake@foothillsacademy.org or 403.270.9400 ext. 252 for more information.
Are you wondering what Camp Amicus is all about? Check out this video of camp that was made last summer by one of Foothills Academy's grade 12 students, Nick Hughes. It gives you a flavour of what a special place Camp Amicus is for campers and staff alike.

Precision Reading Webinar for Parents

Precision Reading  is a short, daily, research-based remedial reading activity designed to improve fluency, sight word vocabulary, and passage comprehension. It enables students from grades three to twelve with low/poor reading abilities to make progress quickly and efficiently. Precision Reading is a one-on-one instructional activity that takes less than ten minutes a day to implement. This program was created by  Dr. Rick Freeze, professor at the University of Manitoba . It can be used by classroom teachers but is an effective tool that parents can use too.

Please note that we are unable to provide a recording of the webinar so sign up for a session that you can attend.
