MNN's Conference Provided Inspiration and Information to ADVANCE the Nonprofit Sector

Last Wednesday, MNN's annual conference ADVANCE was buzzing with excitement as 600 nonprofit and business leaders convened in Framingham to learn, share and connect. The gathering focused on moving our sector forward through the development and strengthening of the nonprofit  workforce, and highlighted the scope, scale and energy of the local nonprofit sector, with professionals at every level in their career from organizations of varying size,  cause and location.

The morning kicked off with an impressive panel of leaders in the sector who each shared their thoughts on attracting, retaining and developing a strong staff. Moderator Tammy  Dowley-Blackman led the conversation as the group explored the opportunities and challenges faced by so many nonprofits. Stewart Lanier, Director of Consulting & Executive Transitions at Third Sector New England shared data from the organization's recent Leadership New England study, which points towards a shift in leadership across the sector. Nonprofit HR CEO Lisa Brown Morton shared what HR trends she's seeing at organizations across the country. And John Bradley, the COO of Year Up (an organization that's been ranked by the Nonprofit Times as a Best Place to Work several times) gave his top tips for creating a culture of success within an organization.

Throughout the  day attendees gained skills to support and advance their careers and improve their organization. They learned from the expert workshop presenters and the pros who facilitated the interactive roundtable sessions and had the opportunity to meet 50 exhibitors who have products and services specifically to support nonprofits.

Later in the day, MNN's new CEO Jim Klocke welcomed the audience and expressed his excitement for his new role. "I am inspired by the work that all of you do. It is hard, it is selfless, it has more than its share of challenges, and it is inspiring," he said. "All of us at MNN take great pride in supporting the work that all of you do across Massachusetts, and we want to do everything we can to help you grow and thrive in the years ahead."

"Get loud and tell your stories"
2015 Lifetime Achievement Award Winner Celebrated for Impact on Communities Across MA
The ballroom was filled with enthusiasm as Tim Garvin, CEO of the United Way of Central MA, accepted the 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award. Tim was presented the award by friend and colleague Susan Mailman, President of Coghlin Electrical Contractors and Chair of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, who spoke of Tim's commitment to acting in the best interest of the greater good. The admiration of Tim was echoed as all 600 attendees rose to their feet to honor him with a standing ovation.

Once on stage, Tim shared words of wisdom and hope. He encouraged the nonprofit professionals in the room to "gather the people that work with you and for you together, and look them in the eye, and say, 'Thank you,' because the only way this sector moves forward - that we advance - is if we do it together and people are appreciated. "

"We have real work to do. We save lives. Nonprofits ensure that humanity is in community..." Tim told the crowd. "Let's knock some doors down. Let's be loud!" Read more about Tim here.

NONPROFIT 411: Take Back Control of Your Workday
By Ryan Ecclestone and Russell Greenwald, Insource Services

We are all faced with more responsibility every day and the need to focus on achieving goals faster and accomplishing more.  With the need to "keep up" many have turned the formerly routine 9-5 workday into the 8-6 plus day, texting and emailing from their phones during "off hours".  A significant amount of the workday involves the simple act of communication.  We have found that the following communication tips and tricks are a simple way to create time to focus and allow for more productive work.

Sending that text only takes 30 seconds, or does it?  It takes about five minutes to get into a groove and focus.  If we are interrupted on average only two times per hour during an eight hour workday, this amounts to over an hour of time spent refocusing on the tasks at hand.  Imagine what you could do with another hour of time each workday!

This constant flow of communication is not always the best use of time.  You cannot always control communication with individuals external to your organization, but you can set up expectations within your business or your team to facilitate communication, minimize interruptions and maximize productivity.  Keep reading...

Access to Justice Fellows Program is a project of the Massachusetts Access to Justice Commission and Lawyers Clearinghouse which enables lawyers and retired judges to partner with nonprofits, legal services organizations, and the courts to provide legal assistance to underserved populations. Each Fellow devotes 10-20 hours a week to their projects and meets as a group on a monthly basis, sharing their experiences, discussing issues with community leaders, and brainstorming strategies for refining and expanding the program. For more information on the program contact Program Director  Mia Friedman at the Lawyers Clearinghouse.

The Commonwealth Institute: Nonprofit Executive Directors' Forum is geared towards ED's of small/medium size non-profits and will be recruiting through mid-November. The Forum, comprised of up to 12 women, meets once a month for half a day with a group leader, culminating in a year-long commitment. The cost is $1,800 per year and can be paid on a monthly or quarterly basis. Participating in The Forum is like having your own BOA's - sharing and discussing innovative fund-raising/development efforts, building a more effective board, and operating on a tight budget. If you are an ED seeking advice from experts and mentoring from peers, this might be a perfect fit. Please contact Pat Cooper for additional information.
