Nominate a Senior Citizen of the Year
Do you know? . . . . a hard-working older volunteer who has contributed greatly to his or her community? Consider nominating him or her for the Senior Citizen of the Year Award. The winner will be honored on May 11 at the State Capitol in Lansing during Older Michiganians Day. The winner will also receive $1000, courtesy of Consumers Energy. Legislation has been introduced requiring Michiganians 75 years and older to visit the Secretary of State office in person to renew their driver's license. House Bill 5171, introduced by Representative Ben Glardon (R-Owosso), is opposed by AARP, which labels it age discrimination. The bill is in the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, with a hearing expected later this month.

AASA issues annual report
Over 40 programs and services were delivered to adults 60+. . . . by Michigan's aging network last year, according to the 2015 Annual Report of the Aging & Adult Services Agency (AASA). In addition to the state-level AASA, the aging network includes 16 regional Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs), and over 1,100 community-based agencies. AASA's annual budget was over $100 million. In other report highlights:
Over 100,000 adults 60+ were helped to live independently by receiving one or more in-home and community-based services;
Nutritious meals were prepared and served to almost 110,000 older Michiganians;
More than 9,000 older adults gave back by serving in three volunteer programs;
Almost 7,000 caregivers were supported in their efforts to keep loved ones living at home.
