Shabbat Shalom
From Rav Tomer Ronen
|
This Shabbat, in addition to reading Parshat Vayikra, we also read Parshat Zachor to remember what Amalek did to us when we left Egypt. Why do we read this now? Because on Purim we celebrate the downfall of |
|
Haman, who descended from Amalek.
Why does the Torah command us to remember "what Amalek did to you on your way out of Egypt, when they encountered you ("karcha") on the way...."? (Devarim 25:17-18). Rav Amital explains that the word "
karcha" evokes the true nature of Amalek, who represent the ideology that we are commanded to eradicate. Amalek's attack on Bnei Yisrael was really a clash of doctrine and belief. Amalek represents the ideology of "
mikreh," of happenstance, which rejects the concept of Hashem's active involvement in the world. Rather, it promotes the idea that everything is left to chance. It is this belief that we reject, for it cancels out our eagerness to serve Hashem and our joy in doing so. After all, if Hashem exercises no control in the world, what reason is there to serve Him?
We must always remember that Hashem is active in the world. Of course, there are many times when we might not understand why something happens, but we must always remember that Hashem sees a much larger picture and never abandons us or leaves things to chance. By r
eading Parshat Zachor on the Shabbat before Purim, we reaffirm our love for, return to, and connection with Hashem - the antithesis of the ideology of Amalek.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rav Tomer Ronen

Grammy's Torah Garden Sprouts on March 30
|
As Rav Ronen announced at the Evening of Achdut, we are thrilled to be starting our own organic school garden at the end of this month!
The garden, called "Grammy's Torah Garden," has been dedicated in memory of Dr. Ruth S. Jacobs by her children and grandchildren: Laurie, Steven, Devorah, Akiva, Ariel, Rafi, and Naomi Ruthie Eagle.
|
|
Yosef Gillers, Director of Education at Amir and founder of GrowTorah, will be working with BPY teachers, students, and parents to create and manage the garden. It will serve as an outdoor experiential classroom for students and faculty across all the grades. Students will eat some of the fresh produce grown in the garden and we hope to donate some to a local food pantry as well.
Watch Divrei Yosef and BPY's Facebook page for more garden news in the coming weeks! |

From a BPY parent...
"
Thank you so much for checking in! It is so like BPY for someone high up in the administrative rungs to just "check in" with a parent, just to see how they're adjusting to their first year. What a nice gesture!
|
|
We really love the school, thank G-d. We are heartened equally by the level of academic standards set by the school and the intimate environment created by the smaller size classes and nurturing teachers at the helm. We just went through the latest round of conferences and were reassured that our [children's teachers] know them well, including not only strengths and weaknesses, but ways in which they might continue to thrive in the future. In addition, there are such nice children in our [children's] classes....We definitely chose wisely, thank G-d!"

More Chodesh Adar Simcha! |
In case you missed it on Friday at Beit Sefer L'Musica....BPY brings in Chodesh Adar II b'simcha with our bnot sherut, Lilach and Shira! Enjoy!
And take a look at Gan Keshet (and Rav Ronen) bringing the joy of Adar to our hallways throughout the school!

Around BPY Early Childhood |
Purim preparations continued in early childhood this week, with students working on their megillot, mishloach manot, and raashanim!
|
Around BPY Elementary School |
It was Pajama Day in first grade today! Students participating in a range of activities, in Hebrew and English, having to do with the theme. What a fun way to end the week before Purim!
Fifth graders started using Plickers for their "do now" in-class math questions. Plickers is a tool that lets a teacher collect real-time assessment data without the need for student devices - and the kids love answering questions in this new way!
|
In Mr. Kahn's seventh grade social studies class, one of our students did a research project on Marquis de Lafayette. For her project, she made this incredible cake because he was very into similar desserts.
|
|
BPY eighth graders attended the Fourth Annual Brain Awareness Fair at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai to supplement their study of human body systems in science. They learned more about
addiction, Alzheimer's disease, autism, and mental health from Mount Sinai faculty, staff, and students.
Junior high students celebrated Rainbow Color Day in honor of Purim - they had a special breakfast and created beautiful murals depicting scenes from the
megillah in their grade's colors.
|
Absolutely Incredible Kid Day! by Stanley Fischman |
As I have mentioned in past years, March 20th marks the observance of ABSOLUTLEY INCREDIBLE KID DAY. It is on this day that parents are urged to write a letter to each of their children telling them why they are special and why they are loved.
|
|
When praising children in the classroom, teachers are urged to go beyond "good job!" type statements and be very specific about what they liked regarding a child's work or conduct. Naturally, our children know that their parents love them. Many of them often hear "I love you" at the end of every phone conversation. Yet as parents we take for granted that our children know WHY we love them, but they can't really be sure until they actually hear it....
