A Message from Council Member
Bryan Frye...
Let's talk about the elephant in the room. Or more accurately, six new elephants taking up residence in a new barn at the Sedgwick County Zoo.

Last week, six elephants from Swaziland arrived in a 747 at Wichita Eisenhower Airport. They were then caravanned over to the zoo where a large welcoming party cheered their arrival. It was a long overdue joyous celebration marked with tears, cheers and smiles.

Most people can agree that the Sedgwick County Zoo is a world class facility and a great source of pride for our community.  However, the elephant exhibit has sorely needed an upgrade for years. That all changes Memorial Day weekend as the Elephants of the Zambezi River Valley opens to the public.

The Elephants of the Zambezi River Valley will be the third largest elephant exhibit in the country. It encompasses more than 5 acres of sprawling outdoors space and the world's largest elephant pool at 550,000 gallons. This habitat is designed to provide elephants with choices that help ensure their physical, mental and social well-being.

The barn itself will be one of the premier holding buildings for elephants in the country. The 18,000 square foot, state-of-the-art building is designed to hold a family of up to nine elephants. The barn features a large public viewing area, where the elephants will have access to the holding yards for roaming.

Please join me in thanking and congratulating the Sedgwick County Commission, Sedgwick County Zoological Society and all the employees, donors and members of the Sedgwick County Zoo for this tremendous gift. Because of their dedication, stewardship and conservation efforts, our zoo continues to raise the bar of excellence compared to other facilities across the country. And just think how much fun we're going to have watching the elephants enjoy their new home.

I'll see you at the zoo!

Fun Fascinating Fact...

The Sedgwick County Zoo, which is the No. 1 outdoor family attraction in Kansas, is the seventh-largest zoo in the country by acreage. The zoo boasts about 400 species and more than 2,500 animals.

Water Rebate Program
Water Conservation Rebate Program
The City dedicated another $100,000 to the Water Conservation Program this year. Beginning February 1, water customers became eligible to receive a rebate for switching to high efficiency appliances and other water efficient devices: such as HE washing machines, dishwashers, toilets and smart irrigation controls, rain sensors and rain barrels. In the first 30 days of the program, nearly $30,000 in rebates have been awarded.

Rain barrels are often an overlooked possibility for conserving water. Studies suggest that one inch of rain dumps 500 gallons of water on the roof of a 2,000 square foot house. EPA estimates that a rain barrel can save nearly 1,300 gallons of water usage during peak summer months. This is a cost effective solution for gardening and irrigation and also reduces the City's demand for treated water.
