Landmark Study Clarifies Stroke Prevention Options
John Fernandez

One of the largest clinical trials focusing on long-term stroke prevention has come to this encouraging conclusion: Stenting and surgery for narrow carotid arteries, both minimally invasive procedures, are equally effective.

For doctors at Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute, the results from the CREST Trial, a 10-year, federally funded clinical trial, represent the latest advancement in improving the long-term health of patients with underlying risk factors for stroke. The Institute was one of the key clinical trial sites in the United States participating in the study.

And now the Institute is well underway with its participation in CREST-2, the follow-up trial which launched in December 2014.

"CREST is the most successful revascularization trial ever," says Barry T. Katzen, MD, Founder and Chief Medical Executive of Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute, and the site principal investigator for the clinical trials.

SPONSOR

The Christine E. Lynn Women's Health & Wellness Institute at Boca Raton Regional Hospital and GE Healthcare, late last month, announced a first-of-its kind agreement between these two leading institutions to advance breast health care. Under the agreement, GE Healthcare has established the Institute as a national show site and identified the framework for developing a training Center of Excellence rooted in education and awareness around GE Healthcare's breast cancer screening and diagnostic technologies, care pathways and outcomes targeted to meet the unique needs of all women.

"Being recognized as a GE Healthcare national show site is a testament to the dedication, training and expertise of our clinical staff to utilize advanced technology to better serve our patients," said Kathy Schilling, MD, Medical Director of the Christine E. Lynn Women's Health & Wellness Institute.
Broward Update

According to Brian Bandell, writing for the SFBJ earlier this week, Broward Health has named its first female top executive as its governing board named Pauline Grant Interim President and CEO. Mr. Bandell also recently reported that Sunrise based Mednax acquired Lighthouse Anesthesia, a medical practice in Savannah, Georgia.
