CENTENNIAL HIGH SCHOOL PTSA'S ONLINE NEWSLETTER

End of Course Testing Begins Next Week

End of Course tests are state developed tests that all Georgia high school students take upon the completion of certain high school classes.  These tests measure how well students have learned the knowledge and skills outlined in the state-adopted content standards in language arts, math, science, and social studies.  Not all high school classes have these state End of Course tests.  The classes that do have End of Course tests are:

9th grade Lit, 11th grade American Lit, Coordinate Algebra, Analytical Geometry, Biology, Physical Science, US History, Economics.

This year the End of Course tests are changing (as are the CRCT tests for grades 3-8).  The new tests are called Georgia Milestones.  In high school, the End of Course test grade would typically count as 20% of the student's final grade in that class (the final exam grade).  However, since this is the first year of the new Georgia Milestone end of course test, the test grade earned on this test will not count towards a student's final grade in that course because the state will not have the results back to us until next fall.  All teachers will still have a comprehensive final exam, worth 20% of the student's grade which will be given during finals week. All students are encouraged and understand that they must put forth their best effort on the Georgia Milestones as the results will be calculated into our school CCPRI score and we all know that we want that number to keep going up!

The following are the testing dates for the Georgia Milestones tests:

  • 9th grade Lit, 11th grade American Lit, Biology (April 27th- April 29th)
  • Economics, 11th grade American Lit (writing portion only), 9th grade Lit (writing portion only) (April 30th - May 1st)
  • Coordinate Algebra, Analytical Geometry, US History (May 4th-May 6th)
  • Physical Science (May 7th - May 8th)

Graduates are to be at Mount Pisgah no later than 4:30pm and will gather upstairs in the balcony until the service begins.  Formal invitations will be sent to all graduates in April.   There is no limit to the number of attendees and their guests - all are welcome. The committee is asking for a $20 donation to defray the costs of the service.

New Scholarship News!

The Executive Student Council has decided to award five - $500 scholarships to qualified seniors. Seniors can see Ms. Linda Jones for details (H04). This is not based on need but on a written response to a prompt. Students will use their student ID rather than their name so the judging will not show bias. The response is 1-2 typed pages and is due to Ms. Jones at 4pm on May 1st. Ms. Jones will have copies of the prompt in her room or hanging on her door for any interested person.

College Acceptance Day

On Friday, April 24 at 9:00am, every senior is being given the chance to have their moment on stage and announce to their classmates and the Centennial community the college(s) they've been accepted to and which college they will be attending next year. We will also recognize students who have chosen to serve our country by enlisting in the military.  This event was a huge success last year and we welcome parents and guests to join us in the auditorium for the celebration.

SENIOR PARENTS:  Please encourage your senior to SIGN UP to participate in this event.  Students can still sign up even though our deadline for sign ups have passed. We want to give as many students an opportunity to get involved in this event as we can - many, many students last year wanted to jump on the list the morning of the event and we can't accommodate that because of logistics issues.  We don't want students to regret not signing up - it is only 20 seconds on stage and they all want to do it once they see their friends up there.  Parents, please help us by getting your senior to sign up prior to the day of the event.  Thank you.

TAG at Centennial: Directed Study

The directed study course allows juniors and seniors to develop their own curriculum for an area about which they have a passion and want to study in more depth.  This can emanate from a topic covered in a class that the student desires to study in more detail, or it can be a topic generated from some other academic interest of the student.

So as sophomores and juniors work through the course verification process, they may want to consider a directed study as an elective if they have room in their course list for next year.

Please contact Janet Siwy, TAG Contact and siwyj@fultonschools.org or your child's counselor for more details.

10th Grader Serena Su

Places 2nd in State PTSA Reflections Art Program

Congratulations to Serena Su whose Reflections artwork was a major success at the state level.  Her artwork titled "The world would be a better place if ... everyone supported music" placed second at state in 10th grade for Visual Arts.  Her artwork was shown at a reception for state winners at the Woodruff Arts Center.

Principal's Honor Roll

On March 6, the CHS PTSA hosted an Awards Breakfast for students who earned a 95% average or above for the first semester of the 2014-2015 school year.  Over 250 students were honored and were asked by invitation to attend the breakfast which was held in the cafeteria before school.   Principal Crumbley was very proud of these students' accomplishments and enjoyed personally congratulating many who were in attendance.  Students were treated to Chick Fil A chicken biscuits, fruit and beverages.  We hope to see these students and many more back for the breakfast next year!  Congratulations to the seniors who were able to attend - we couldn't have been more thrilled to honor them with this last awards breakfast.

Carnival Knight!

Centennial High School class of 2017 student council will be hosting a festival on April 25, 2015 from 4-7 pm. There will be a rock wall inflatable slide, a dunk tank, a live DJ, food, and games galore! This festival is for children of any age and a fun family night out! Come out Saturday, April 25 to support sophomore student council and to have a blast! It will be located on the lower practice field of Centennial that can be accessed from the stadium entrance. Hope to see everyone there!

The money will go towards next year's prom and the 2016 Homecoming. Eventually all of the money in student council left over (which hopefully we will have some left over), will go towards student scholarships. This year Executive Council gave $500 to two model UN students so they could go to New York and will also give out five $500 scholarships for seniors to use for college expenses next year. Hopefully when all the dances are over, the 2017 student council will be able to do the same!
