Hello,

A special thank you to Bret Hart for breaking the silence and sharing his prostate cancer diagnosis.

This local hero has made a huge impact on the fight for early detection of prostate cancer. Men are listening to the advice of the one who has survived many battles but describes prostate cancer as his toughest. After his public declaration Calgary’s Prostate Cancer Centre was flooded with phone calls and visits from men wanting to be pro-active and have a baseline PSA blood test at the Centre. The Centre hosted a very special Valentine's Day clinic in honor of Bret Hart and men’s Sweethearts.

We are happy to report that Bret Hart is recovering from surgery and has sent us this message to share:

"Winning my battle against prostate cancer with my two most precious weapons, Kyra and Grayson.”

A Simple Stop to the MAN VAN Saved A Life
Feature Heading
October 30, 2014 began as a typical workday for Murray Waddell. He works for Agrium at the plant in Carseland. When he heard the Prostate Cancer Centre’s Man Van had come for a visit, he booked time to stop-by.  The van was on-site to offer the employees the opportunity to take part in a three hour baseline PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) blood testing clinic.

Murray was relatively aware of the disease as his own father had been treated for prostate cancer.  He was diligent in booking his annual physical through his family doctor and always ensured the PSA test was ticked as part of his annual blood work – he knew his risk factor was higher than most with a family member previously diagnosed.

Murray signed up for the clinic and climbed aboard the van. He offered his arm up for a small blood sample and ten minutes later was back at work. He didn’t think much about the test until the next morning when he received a call from a nurse at Calgary’s Prostate Cancer Centre who informed him his PSA result was higher than it should be for his 54 years of age.  He was sent for an additional PSA blood test and once again the results confirmed his reading was much higher than normal.
A small monthly gift makes a big difference to the thousands of men we see each year.

You can make a donation in your name or in honor of a loved one. A small gift each month can add up to a life saved at the Prostate Cancer Centre. All annual donations totaling $500 or more are recognized on our donor wall at the Centre and in our annual report.
All You Need is Love...and a Free PSA Blood Test for your Valentine
On Friday, February 12th Calgary’s Prostate Cancer Centre offered free baseline PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) blood tests to men over 40 at the Centre. Men lined up at the Centre at 7:00 am to take part. Those that participated, received a rose and a Valentine card to give to their sweethearts - verifying the fact that they are looking after themselves so they can be around for the ones they love.
Farm Tech 2016

In January, the Canadian Canola Growers Association along with FarmTech, sponsored the Man Van at the FarmTech Conference in Edmonton. During this 3 day event, the Man Van provided PSA tests to 236 men, 100 receiving the test for the very first time!

Additionally, 229 men participated in the Prostate Cancer Centre’s Men’s Health Initiative, receiving blood sugar, blood pressure and body mass index measurements. It is wonderful to see so many rural men take a proactive step in maintaining their health and understand the importance of early prostate cancer detection.

A New Look to the Rural MAN VAN
Our rural MAN VAN had a makeover over the Christmas break. We wanted the two MAN VANs (City and Rural) to look alike and be more unified. Check out the transformation!

Billy of Oz
On January 29, 2016, the 18th annual Bill Brooks Benefit returned to Hotel Arts. This year’s theme was Billy of Oz. There were plenty of witches, Dorothy’s, lions, tigers and bears, oh my! People skipped down the yellow brick road into the Land of Oz, where a total of $7.7 million dollars had been raised  since its inception for prostate cancer in Calgary. To top it all of, a brand new 2016 Harley Davidson, 2016 Camaro and 2 tickets to WestJet are being raffled off on March 2.  Thank you to Canada Safeway for sponsoring the event, the Calgary Health trust for partnering with the Bill Brooks Benefit Committee and supporters for all you help in making this year’s event a success.
