FOR STUDENTS

GCWEEKTHANK YOU MHS
GUIDANCE COUNSELORS!
National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), will be celebrated from Feb. 1-5, 2016.

The purpose of this event is to focus public attention on the unique contribution of professional school counselors within our school systems. National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a future.

The special week honoring school counselors provides recognition for school counselors who implement a comprehensive school counseling program, which is a vital part of the educational process for all students as they meet the challenges of the 21st century.

"School counselors work with all students to remove barriers to learning by addressing students' academic concerns, career awareness in post-secondary options and personal/social skills," said Kwok-Sze Wong, Ed.D., ASCA executive director. "Comprehensive school counseling programs help to increase student achievement and provide a much-needed resource for students, parents, teachers and administrators. School counselors are integral to student success."

Please join the Milton High School community in honoring and recognizing the work of our local school counselors!
TEACHER OF THE MONTH
MILTON'S TEACHER OF THE MONTH FOR JANUARYTOMJAN
Congratulations to Ms. Holly Groover for being named January Teacher of the Month!
Philosophy of Teaching:
Ms. Groover believes that learning is a lifelong process. She believes that no one ever truly stops learning; there will always be more to learn and more ways to improve herself.
She values personal responsibility, leadership, lifelong learning, and integrity as life skills. Teaching students these skills and helping them find ways to implement them in their lives has become her personal mission.

She believes that all students can and want to learn. It is her responsibility to appropriately challenge her students and foster their natural desire to learn.

All students do not learn in the same way so she strongly believes in differentiation and varying her teaching methods. This is especially true with Career Tech.

She believes in doing what is best for students, even when it means making hard choices.

And last, but not least, she truly believes that fairness doesn't mean that everyone gets the same; fairness means everyone gets when they need to succeed.

FLIGHT
Dear Parents,

I am excited to give you an update on what your students have been learning with the Habitudes curriculum this past month.  As a reminder, we have been using Habitudes as a way to develop leadership, character, and career readiness in your students.  This month we focused on two images -Personal Laptop and Pop Quiz.   Below, I've included a brief summary of what each of these images is all about!
  • Personal Laptop:  "Leaders are disciplined about what they store in their mind and heart."
  • Pop Quiz:  "Leaders experience tests as they mature. These tests reveal the leaders potential and maturity."

I encourage you to ask your son or daughter the following questions:

  1. What were the images that you talked about this month?
  2. Which image and leadership lesson was your favorite and why?
  3. How could you relate that leadership principal back to your own life?

Looking ahead to February, the following is planned:

  • Registration Advice--Freshmen will have the opportunity to ask questions of their mentors about class registration for sophomore year. Students are encouraged to find a healthy balance between course load and extracurricular activities.
  • MPD--The Milton Police Department will visit to talk with freshmen class regarding various topics such as staying out of trouble, common problems teens face, laws impacting teens, smart social media, driving tips, etc.  Freshmen and mentors will be encouraged to ask questions.
  • Kindness/Spark Week--Freshmen will spend a day with their mentors learning about Kindness Week which is a fun-filled student initiative to promote kindness, acceptance, and school-spirit.

Thank you for your continued support!
