What We're Advocating for...

Advocacy has kept us busy this year!   Our 2016 advocacy efforts have been focused on collaborating with state-wide organizations and task forces, researching the issues, educating our partners and supporters and meeting with local legislators to build relationships and influence change. As a result of our work,  significant progress has been made on major issues affecting women and girls in our community but, there is still more work to do!

The New York State Assembly and Senate have brought forward  paid family leave legislation congruent with Governor Cuomo's proposal.  The Assembly passed the bill in February and the Senate bill is awaiting a vote. Sheri had the opportunity and honor to present on the importance of Paid Family Leave for women and children with Lt. Governor Kathy Hochul and  US Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez on International Women's Day.

State budget negotiations are in full-swing as our legislators in Albany work to pass an on-time budget by April 1.  In partnership with the  Child Care Resource Network and the  After-School Network of Western New York, we have been working with our legislators to protect and expand child care subsidies and after-school program funding.  Access to quality, affordable child care and after-school programs is critical for working families in Western New York.

This year could represent a critical turning point. Significant progress surrounding paid family leave and child care is just around the corner. Over the next month, the New York State legislature will make decisions on these key topics.  Join WoMen in Action and stand with us as we make our voices heard and support local families during this important moment.

WoMen in Action is a virtual team of passionate men and women with a desire to learn more about the issues affecting women and their families and to be part of a community of change. Members receive periodic  emails based on WNYWF's Advocacy Agenda
and educational materials relating to the Pathways to Progress Report.

Barriers and Bias Research Report Release
and Panel on Women in Leadership

Wednesday, March 30th, 2016
3:30pm to 5:30pm -
742 Delaware Ave, Buffalo

The WNY Women's Foundation , in collaboration with the Buffalo Chapter of the American Association of University Women  (AAUW),  will host a  l ive stream screening of the  Barrriers and Bias Research Report Release and Panel on Women in Leadership.

Women have been leaders throughout history, and today the tradition of volunteer female leadership continues to flourish. Yet in terms of paid leadership, women's elevation to top positions is relatively rare. Why do men still vastly outnumber women in these positions?

AAUW's newest research report, Barriers and Bias: the Status of Women in Leadership , explores this question, drawing from scholarly research and paying special attention to stereotypes and biases. The report provides recommendations for individuals and those in the education, corporate, and political sectors to contribute to an environment in which gender is no longer a barrier to leadership.

Live from the Newseum in Washington, D.C., a panel of experts from industry, politics, and academia, moderated by journalist and author
Cokie Roberts
will discuss the report's findings, what they mean for women in leadership, and how these industries - and our society as a whole - can benefit from more women leaders.

The panel will include: Marion Blakey, President & CEO of Rolls-Royce North America;
Salli Frattini,  veteran awards show producer; and
Diane Linen Powell , advisor to a number of startups  and non-profit organizations.

This is a FREE event however, registration is required due to limited seating.
