Bike "Near Misses" and Speed Limits
|
See the article in the AZ Daily Star about Bike "Near Misses". Robert Fritz, a local bicyclist, has launched a website to report "near misses" to help Tucson transportation planners. Read Here:
"Since Fritz launched the website March 6, a dozen bicyclists have reported near misses, including one in which a 12-year-old rider was run off the road by a car and another where a school bus passed "really close" to a commuter on a bicycle, Fritz said. At Fritz's website, bicyclists can report the location, time and circumstances of near misses, as well as crashes that may not have been reported to authorities, he said. He then shares the information with advocacy groups.
The Grant Road Coalition-Central Segments has asked the city to seriously review the intersection at Mountain/Grant and Park/Grant since neighbors have reported many "near misses". Phase 5 construction is scheduled five to seven years out and the City has time to revise plans to take into account bike safety issues. Mountain is the second most traveled pathway in Tucson and JP neighbors see the stream of bicycles racing to and from class each morning and afternoon.

FINAL WEEK TO TAKE SURVEY ON SPEED LIMITS FOR BIKE BOULEVARDS -
The City of Tucson Bicycle and Pedestrian Program is seeking your help through an online survey regarding the motor vehicle speed limit on bicycle boulevards (select residential streets that prioritize bicycling and walking). The survey linked below will be used to gather the community's opinions on speed limits and safety. However, in order to change the speed limit on residential streets, it would require a change at the state level. Cities such as Portland and Seattle have lowered the speed limits on their bike boulevards to 20 mph to promote safety and comfort. The anonymous survey should take less than 10 minutes to complete, and it will be available through this Friday.\

Wednesday, April 6, 7 AM to 6 PM -- STUFF THE CAT FOR THE FOOD BANK. Location is University and Cherry, where a Cat Tran bus will be available for your canned food and cash donations. Last year, the community stuffed one bus. Let's make it two buses this year!
Friday, Saturday, Sunday April 8, 9, and 10, varying hours -- SPRING FLING on the UA Mall. http://springfling.arizona.edu/. Please note that this event involves fencing and complete closure of the UA Mall to through traffic, whether by motor vehicle, bicycle, or foot. Because this event involves considerable equipment set-up and tear-down, traffic disruptions are possible during the entire period from Monday, April 4 through Tuesday April 12.
Friday and Saturday, April 8 and 9 -- RINCON HEIGHTS NEIGHBORHOOD YARD SALE. Location is 1607 E. 10th St., which is east of Cherry.

There were only 4,300 of these cars made. The drawing is December 2016. One hundred percent of the ticket sales benefit the neighborhood projects.
