Sometimes called "the community event of the year," Localtopia will pack Williams Park Saturday with thousands enjoying music, specialty "villages" and the wares of nearly 200 vendors.
Every item, every show, and every sound and aroma is locally produced, organizers say, and the St. Pete-centric approach is what makes the event special. It's back for its third year.

Creative Loafing: Kriseman raises Carter G. Woodson flag to honor Black History Month
Monday morning marked the dawn of the 40th year that we've been observing Black History Month.
To commemorate that milestone, St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman raised a flag featuring the likeness of Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the progenitor of the concept and namesake of a history museum in the city, over City Hall.
"I hope the message it sends is, at City Hall we really believe in being a city of opportunity where the sun shines on all," he said. "This is just another example of recognizing that this needs to be a community where everyone is welcome, everyone has a chance to become successful, and that's who we want to be as a city."

Tampa Bay Times: Kriseman takes inaugural commercial flight out of Albert Whitted
Mayor Rick Kriseman and St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Chris Steinocher went on a daytrip to Fort Lauderdale Monday.
But it was their mode of travel was the whole point.
Kriseman and Steinocher were the inaugural passengers on Tropic Ocean Air's first flight this morning from Albert Whitted Airport on St. Petersburg's waterfront.

St. Petersburg Tribune: St. Pete refines plan to help poor south-city neighborhoods
With the aim of helping qualified families become homeowners, the city held a free workshop "Kickoff 2016: The year of Home Ownership in St. Petersburg" Sat., Jan. 30 at the St. Pete campus of Pinellas Technical College. Presented in partnership with Neighborhood Home Solutions and the Tampa Bay Community Development Corporation, the program covered an overview of the home buying process with topics including purchase assistance and how to qualify for a loan.
Nikki Gaskin-Capehart, director of Urban Affairs the city, told the prospective homebuyers that home ownership is an effective way of reducing poverty in the city, adding that home ownership is a very important part of building wealth.

Tampa Bay Times: In effort to boost Midtown, City Council approves anti-poverty program
The St. Petersburg City Council approved an assistance program aimed at alleviating poverty in Midtown and other southern neighborhoods Thursday, but not without two hours of debate.
The CRA's tax-increment financing programs are designed to funnel money into affordable housing, commercial improvements and workforce training. Mayor Rick Kriseman has said his plan will focus on programs to lift people out of poverty instead of more traditional infrastructure projects.
