Mr. Birdsong's Newsletter

What a week!!! Catholic Schools Week 2016 was a huge success. The week was full of themed dress days and numerous activities to celebrate St. Teresa School. Kick-off Mass, Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, Family Picnic, Movie Day, SLU Basketball Game, Teacher Luncheon, the Oddwalk Concert, and the Pep Rally highlighted our weeklong celebration. Thank you to everyone who supported us throughout the week and, of course; throughout the year. Much of what we celebrate this week with the students is possible because of our many volunteers and supporters.   Catholic Schools Week is a celebration of our school community, and we certainly celebrated this week.
Last weekend the Mighty Pawns won their chess tournament. There were 194 students in attendance with 52 of those being from St. Teresa. There were a total of 14 perfect scores (winning all 4 matches) and St. Teresa had 6 of the 14. The following students had those perfect scores: Ben Shephard, Baron Hackney, Xavier Rivas, Joseph Hamilton, Cole Williford, and Brendan Hill. Congratulations to those with the perfect scores and to all of the Mighty Pawns for their victory.
Congratulations to the following students who were selected for their submissions to Anthology of Poetry by Young Americans. Amanuel Foley, Johanna Pawlow, Maddy McMurray, Emma Howard, Elani Aycock, Auggie Prange, Alex Renner, Luke Brandt, and Brianna Birdsong will have their submission published in the current addition of Anthology of Poetry by Young Americans. Congratulations are also in order to Addison Laramore for winning the 4th grade Bonkers for Birds Art Contest. Addison will have an opportunity to represent St. Teresa on February 13 at the National Great Rivers Museum. Great job; Addison!
Don't forget that the Lenten Season starts next week with Ash Wednesday, which also means the Men's Club Fish Fries are right around the corner as well. February 12 is the first Fish Fry of the year, and there will be two others on February 26 and March 11. Come out and support the Men's Club.
The time is here for the Annual St. Teresa Dinner Auction.  A sincere thank you goes out to all those on the Auction Committee, who have dedicated their time and talents to making this year's event an enjoyable evening for all.  We thank each and every one of you who support the auction in one way or another.  The future benefits our students will receive from its profits are too numerous to count. Enjoy your time at the auction or in whatever activities the weekend brings, and may your favorite Super Bowl team reign victorious!
A few weeks ago; a number of our kindergarten thru 2nd grade students were interviewed for a spot that will air at halftime of the Super Bowl. I do not have very much detail about the commercial/spot, but make sure to pay close attention at halftime of the big game this Sunday for our students.
The past several weeks; I have been sharing information with you about the importance of STEM and an integrated curriculum. The following excerpt was taken from the Edison Muckers website and will round out the importance of specific subject areas.

Art and Creativity

In the arts, like the written and spoken word, we find creativity, non-traditional out-of-the-box thinking...so often very crucial to the very concept of invention....and the foundation of technological advances. Art lives from advances in technology and advances it at the same time. One has only to look at how the advent of new materials, paint pigments, and even computer graphics has totally revolutionized how artists express themselves. What about sculpting in various new materials, even metals? The mathematics of fractals has generated amazing new art representations. Notice how high-tech a stage play has become! Art affects us all and is a primal instinct of man- note the leaving of drawings on cave walls...an early attempt to understand one's world and leave a record [education] for those that followed. How can the arts not be a consideration in an integrated education?
The Sound of Music
What a wonderful opportunity it will be to integrate music into every student's day. Here lies great opportunities to show at the very least, the relationship of music to science, acoustics, the biology of the ear, the design and engineering of instruments, the tone and meter of music and its cousin poetry, how math and music intersect, the impact of music on society and the technological advances of recorded sound and modern music of today, synthesized music, and a world of other fascinating aspects of music. From music we can also learn the teamwork of the orchestra and band-for teamwork is an absolutely fundamental underpinning of life-on-the-job after graduation. Music is powerful stuff and it too, like the arts, rides the buffeting waves of technological change, taking from and contributing to it.
Lessons for all from Sports
So much can be brought into the STEM classroom from sports. Great lessons of science, math (sports statistics), biology (the design and use of the body in sporting activities), the social power of sports (the Olympics) and like music mentioned above ... teamwork!

Have a great weekend,
Mr. Birdsong

Lenten Regulations

Each year the Lord Jesus calls the entire Church to a special season of penance and renewal. As we begin this holy time of Lent, we should reflect on our need for conversion of heart, prayer, charitable works and penance.

The season of Lent extends this year from Ash Wednesday, February 10, to the Mass of the Lord's Supper, March 24, inclusive.
  1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all Fridays of Lent.
  2. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is also bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
  3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. The other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one's needs, but altogether they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the obligation of the law is modified. Because Lent is a special season for all Christians, we should not lightly excuse ourselves from these penitential practices.
To completely disregard the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful.
Lent 2016 - Year of Mercy
as proclaimed by Pope Francis

Living in an "instant gratification" society, children can have a hard time understanding the purpose of Lenten sacrifice. Lent is a call to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. These acts are meant to help us become selfless, to focus on others, and to do good works for those around us. During this Year of Mercy, we are going to focus on the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy during the next 6 weeks. Below you will find a breakdown of the works of mercy that we will be our focus each week with suggestions for how to live them in your home, community, and at school.
