Water for Food Global Conference: Early registration ends March 18
|
The early registration period for the
2016 Water for Food Global Conference ends after March 18. This year's theme is "Catalytic Collaborations: Building Public-Private Partnerships for Water and Food Security," focusing on the powerful impact that can be achieved through public-private partnerships (PPPs) in water for food research, technology and project development.
Join us for an engaging mix of plenary sessions, concurrent sessions and workshops representing different voices in PPPs. There will also be various special events, including a workshop on smallholder irrigation in sub-Saharan Africa co-convened with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and KickStart International in partnership with the CGIAR Research Program on Water, Land and Ecosystems; the world premiere of "Thirsty Land," a documentary feature film; a student poster competition; photography competition and exhibit; farm-to-table dinner and closing reception with live music.

On March 22, in conjunction with the United Nations World Water Day, the Obama Administration will host a White House Water Summit including a select group of about 120 water leaders from across the U.S. to raise awareness of water issues and potential solutions, and to catalyze ideas and actions to help build a sustainable and secure water future through science and technology.
Water for Food Institute Founding Executive Director Roberto Lenton was invited to attend the event, along with WFI Program Associate Richael Young in her role as Mammoth Trading president.
The Water Summit will be live-streamed, and the public is invited to participate through social media using the hashtag #WHWaterSummit.

WFI celebrates World Water Day March 22
|
World Water Day is held annually on March 22 to bring attention to the importance of freshwater and to advocate for sustainable freshwater management.
To commemorate the day, WFI will highlight how Water for Food researchers are working toward a more water and food secure world on social media. Join the conversation on Facebook and Twitter by using the hashtag #WaterIs.

The Nebraska Water Center/Water Sciences Laboratory's 2015 Annual Report is available online. The report recounts accomplishments during the past year in areas of research, support for University of Nebraska research faculty and staff, education and outreach programming, and communications. It also details unique Nebraska-based programs and projects sponsored or conducted by WFI. It is dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the WSL, which was founded as a core analytical research facility for the University of Nebraska in 1990. UNL researcher applies expertise in aquifer recharge to arid regions

Leveraging the University of Nebraska's expertise in groundwater management, Water for Food Institute Faculty Fellow and UNL Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Professor Vitaly Zlotnik (pictured at left) is working on a project with colleagues in Oman and Jordan that focuses on using treated waste water more efficiently through Managed Aquifer Recharge.

As a result of the civil conflict, threats to water and food security in Syria and surrounding nations are a daily reality. Join us as we learn from international experts about the refugee crisis and the ripple of humanitarian concerns. Event highlights:
- Keynote addresses and a panel discussion with experts on water issues in the Middle East, including governmental and nongovernmental agencies, journalists and academics
- A conversation with University of Nebraska students about their recent trip to Jordan
- The screening of Salam Neighbor, a documentary about Syrian refugees in Jordan.
The conference is free and open to the public. It is hosted by WFI, the Norman and Bernice Harris Center for Judaic Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the International Arid Lands Consortium and sponsored by the Forsythe Family Foundation in Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs and UNL's Global Studies Program and Department of Political Science.

Alexander Stejskal, Suzanne Polzkill and Anna Wistrom joined WFI in Jan. 2016 to help a team of researchers led by Director of Policy Nick Brozovic analyze water policy in the High Plains. The team is composed of professors from University of Nebraska-Lincoln and post-doctoral fellows and staff from WFI.
Alexander and Suzanne are collecting data on groundwater regulations for irrigation in High Plains states with the goal of developing an interactive atlas that presents all the data in a clear and visually appealing fashion. This atlas will help researchers and policymakers understand the evolution and heterogeneity of water management practices in the High Plains at a glance. Anna is researching data on agricultural energy use, which will help advance the understanding of the complex decision-making farmers face about water and energy use for food production. This will assist policymakers in developing robust strategies for making the best use of limited natural resources for agricultural production.
