A budget airline plans to power its planes using hydrogen fuel cells
ScienceAlert

Hydrogen fuel cells - an ultra-clean energy source - offer a lot of potential for powering the transportation of the future, but there are significant hurdles to overcome: price, size, and supply, to name just three. Now UK budget airline EasyJet thinks it might have found a way to incorporate hydrogen fuel cells into its planes in a way that's safe and cost-effective.

Innovative Method to Harness CO2 from Atmosphere for Methanol Production
AZoCleantech

Researchers from the USC Loker Hydrocarbon Research Institute have succeeded in generating fuel from thin air. This is the first time that researchers have directly transformed carbon dioxide, present in the air, into methanol. This conversion took place at a relatively low temperature.

AFC Energy achieves milestone power output from KORE fuel cell system in Germany
Gasworld

AFC Energy, an industrial fuel cell power company, has successfully delivered gross electrical output in excess of 200kW at its KORE fuel cell power plant in Stade, Germany. The UK-based company's KORE system converts hydrogen (H2) into 'clean' electricity, for large-scale use in industrial applications. In the trial, which concluded on 31st January, 200kW of power was produced from the fuel cell system and it was the first time all three tiers of the KORE fuel cell system operated in parallel with each other to successfully dispatch power into the German power grid.

Another large manufacturer to test Ceres Power's fuel cell tech
Proactive Investors UK

Fuel cell developer Ceres Power (LON:CWR) has signed an evaluation agreement for its proprietary technology with another large manufacturing group. Under this new agreement Ceres will supply a complete system for testing by the (unnamed) potential customer. If successful, the two will jointly develop a multi kW electricity generation system. The fuel cell uses a perforated sheet of steel that has layers of ceramic ink printed on to it. The ceramic layer coverts fuel directly to electricity and can be used with different fuel types such as natural gas or hydrogen.

Amplats to help improve hydrogen fuel cells with $4 million investment
Intelligent Energy

Anglo American Platinum (Amplats), one of the largest platinum miners in the world, has announced that it will be investing $4 million to help reduce the overall cost of fuel cell vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with hydrogen fuel cells, which generate electrical power through the consumption of hydrogen. While these energy systems are considered efficient and a valuable solution for vehicles, they are quite expensive.
