Creative Connections
March 30, 6:30 PM
(Note: Date changed)
Sometimes petting and brushing your dog isn't enough during a visit. Working for prolonged periods of time with kids or elders sometimes calls for you to have a few extra "tricks up your sleeve." We have created a fun, hour-long class that will give you scads of ideas on easy, simple activities you can incorporate into your visits.

Site to Celebrate

We would like to thank all of the sites we visit for supporting PAWS and Pet Therapy!  Here is just one of the sites we are proud to celebrate.

CERTS - Smyrna
Located in Kent County, CERTS provides support for adults with severe disabilities. They have incorporated pet therapy into their program for several years. Recently, they allowed a prospective grantor to shadow PAWS team Janice Baldwin-Hench & Luka so that they could observe the effectivness of our pet therapy program. Thank you for this opportunity!

PAWS needs some things!

Dog Collars

PAWS FOR  "TALKING"
Gavin petting Rosie, Sarah Baker's Therapy Companion

Many thanks to Lisa Feehery who granted permission for us to share the following e-mails:

Dear Devon [Laudenslager, Swarthmore Public Library],

Thank you for orchestrating the PAWS event last night.

We appreciated that the handlers allowed us to use this opportunity as a language (instead of reading) session for our special needs child.  It was very exciting to him (he is a little bit scared of dogs). He used so much spontaneous language tonight, commenting about the dogs characteristics ("it's black, it has a waggly tail, it's lying on the green blanket"), asking their owners their names [Rosie, Bosun, Rutland] and if he could hold the leash and walk their dogs, using self-talk about his feelings ("you [I] can't be scared"), answering personal questions from strangers, and answering recall questions from me ("how many dogs were there?" ="3").   This is huge!  He usually only says a few (2-4) words at a time.

Kudos to the patient handlers who made us feel welcome. It was perfect to come at the end of the evening with fewer people.  We would certainly love to attend again!

Best,
Lisa

Dear Wendy,

After our fourth session at Swarthmore library, Gavin finally felt comfortable enough with Rosie to put his head on her back to cuddle with her.  And of course he was using lots of spontaneous language!

Best,
Lisa
