Spelling prowess recognized

It took 13 rounds to determine the winner, but Carrollton Middle School sixth grader Dylan Roulaine finally captured the title of champion in the Carrollton City Schools systemwide spelling bee Feb. 4 by correctly spelling "banquet."  Another five rounds were needed to designate a runner up with CJHS eighth grader Shannon Foss earning that privilege. A total of 10 spellers from Carrollton Middle School and Carrollton Junior High were eligible to compete. ... then join us for CJHS Poetry & Prose Night on Thursday, Feb. 25, in the media center. It should last from 3:15-4:15, so be sure to have a ride by then and remember to bring a short story or poem you penned.

Gymnastics meeting
next Wednesday

Seventh grade girls interested in gymnastics team need to meet with Coach McGovern on Wednesday, Feb. 10, at 7:10 a.m. in the cafeteria.

Hoops for Heart
to be held Feb. 26

Students at CJHS are jumping at the chance to fight heart disease and stroke. On Feb. 26, CJHS will hold its annual Hoops for Heart event to raise money for the American Heart Association. The funds raised support heart and stroke research and educational programs for youth.

Survey to support
school improvement

Carrollton City schools are participating in the Georgia Parent Survey program and need your help. The survey contains only 24 questions.

All survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for school climate analysis. Thank you in advance for participating in our school improvement efforts. Individual data results from the Georgia Parent Survey will not be available to the public and will not be posted online. 


Shannon Foss will represent the school system at the next level if winner Dylan Roulaine is unable to participate in the region competition. Congratulations, Shannon!
Feb. 19 deadline for CJHS
Black History Essay Contest

Carrollton Junior High School's annual Black History Essay Contest is fast approaching. The first place winner will receive $100 and second place receives $50. All essays are due to Mr. Sidel by Feb. 19.

This year's essay topic is: There have been many historical events and influential people that have advanced the quest for equal rights in America. Choose one event and/or person that has helped to advance equal treatment/rights between African Americans and other cultures.

Provide a brief summary of the event or person. How has this contribution positively changed American culture? Your essay should explain how this event and/or person has influenced present-day American culture. Be sure to provide specific examples. All sources must be cited in a separate Works Cited Page.

February projects
serve from the heart

The CJHS Junior Beta Club is collecting Valentine's items for the Carroll County Women's Shelter. Items to donate include individually wrapped bags of candy, individually wrapped snack items and stuffed animals. Junior Beta members will receive one service hour credit for every three items donated. Please drop off the the items in Ms. Driver's classroom by Feb. 11.

Junior Beta Club members may also receive service hour credit for donating items for Trojan University's Operation Gratitude. The following items are needed: socks (not white), pens, travel-size board games, packs of lip balm, individual packs of moist towelettes, crossword and sudoku puzzle books. Items may be dropped off in the donation box located in the front office or in Ms. Driver's classroom throughout the month of February.
Academic Bowl Team takes top honors at Manchester competition

The Carrollton Junior High School Academic Bowl Team scored its first victory of the year at Manchester Middle School on Monday, Feb. 1. CJHS beat 12 other schools with a score of 535 points, 40 points better than second place. With the final competition coming up at the end of the month, CJHS currently holds second place in the region standings. Team members representing Carrollton at Manchester are, from left, Cirel Gourley, John Robert Ray, Captain Edward Bohannon, Joseph Snipes, Eli Nunez, Zaccary Priest and Willow Huett. The team is coached by Shawn Lawrence.
