SAT Word
of the Week

quandary
(kwon-duh-ree)

As used on the SAT, its meaning is: a state of uncertainty or perplexity.

Here it is used in a sentence:  Since both his AP History and AP Calculus exams were scheduled for the same day, Mark was in a quandary about which should take priority in his study schedule.

This year's motto:

The Carrollton High School FBLA chapter shows off the school's first-ever region trophy.
FBLA wins school's first
region championship

The Carrollton High School chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America recently competed at the Region 7 Leadership Conference and came away as big winners. Overall, the chapter had six region champions, 28 Top Five finishes and 42 of the 48 competitors finishing in the Top 10. Those results were enough to earn Carrollton High School its first-ever region crown.

"The West Region is made up of eight counties and contains more than 30 high schools, so winning this award was a great accomplishment for us," said Robby Blakemore, chapter adviser. "We needed everyone on board to win this very competitive region."

Blakemore said CHS FBLA Chapter President Chris Collins was a true leader at the event, garnering first place finishes in Management Information Systems and Public Speaking. Chris Parker and Amber Zheng also placed first in two events, Future Business and Personal Finance and Business Math and Database Design Concepts, respectively. Other top finishers include Rachel Rooks (MIS), Cruz Cuellar, Bryson Wallace and Christian McDowell (Networking Concepts).

The chapter now moves on to compete at the state competition held in Athens March 6-8. Congratulations for making school history!

Move On When Ready Parent Night Feb. 18
Students and parents interested in learning more about dual enrollment opportunities for next school year should attend Move On When Ready Parent Night on Thursday, Feb. 18, at 6 p.m. in the CHS cafeteria.

An important consideration for students who may want to enroll in courses at the University of West Georgia or West Georgia Technical College must attempt the SAT no later than the March 5 test and the ACT no later than the Feb. 6 test date. Students should see their guidance counselor or Mrs. Ingui for more information.

Note: Move On When Ready provides a wealth of options for students in the Performance Learning Center, too. See below:
PLC CORNER
Students given advice
on dual enrollment options
One of the great things about the PLC is our pledge to encourage students to take advantage of the dual enrollment opportunities afforded by the recent Move on When Ready legislation.

April Wood, the eCore representative from the University of West Georgia, was recently a guest speaker at the PLC. Mrs. Wood's presentation was very informative as she explored the myriad opportunities available through both on-campus and online dual enrollment courses. She explained the application process and the criteria for acceptance to the programs.

The presentation was very enlightening and further invoked the desire for many of the PLC students to consider post-secondary opportunities.
NORTHWEST REGIONAL SOCIAL STUDIES FAIR
Jackson Newbern
Madalyn Jack and Maria Roman
CHS social studies projects earn first place

Two CHS projects presented in the Northwest Regional Social Studies Fair placed first in their categories and in the top 16 overall at the competition, held Jan. 30 at Kennesaw State University.

"I was among those judging the various projects and can testify to the quality and effort students put into these projects," said Michael Harvey, instructional coordinator for the CHS Social Studies Department and Academic Team sponsor. "Carrollton High School students once again distinguished themselves. It was a good day to be a Trojan."

Sophomore Jackson Newbern's project, titled "Is Quality of Life Better in the Northern, Southern, or Western States?" earned a first place award, as did the project produced by Maria Roman, Madalyn Jack and Katherine Curry, also sophomores, titled "The Death Penalty v. Life in Prison without Parole in the United States."

These projects will be moving on to the State Social Studies Fair in April to be held at Clayton State University. Congratulations to all four on a job well done!
