Ideas for Reading and Writing at Home

Writing
The best place to write is anyplace your child goes. It could be a ball game, a family outting, or at a restaurant. When they write about something that is happening, they are able to capture details and feelings that they can add to their writing.

Reading
One way to help your child learn what types of books he likes to read is to set up a reading challenge for them.Give them a time frame to complete the challenge in and a number of books he has to read. Make a checklist so they can mark off each type of book he finishes and he can track his progress.

Counselor's Corner
Presented by Mrs. Scott and Mrs. Gerwel

Happy March, Sweeny families! I do not know about you but the Sweeny counselors have been loving this nice, warm weather that we have had. This month, Ms Scott is going over bullying and tattling with K-2nd grade during her classroom visits. Ms. Gerwel is teaching and reviewing good test-taking skills with the third, fourth, fifth grade students in preparation of MAP testing in April. Ms. Scott is starting her small groups again while Ms Gerwel is working with some of her small groups until April. Remember if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child, do not hesitate to contact your child's counselor. K-2, Ms. Scott and 3-5 Ms. Gerwel.

Special Teachers' News

Physical Education:

This month in Physical Education we have been learning about ways to keep our hearts healthy.  Our school is participating in Jump Rope For Heart and has been raising money for the American Heart Association. We have learned about good nutrition and can identify the five food groups. We have also learned about the function of the heart and have identified different ways to find our pulse.  We've played several games that build our cardio respiratory endurance, and we can describe how the heart and body respond to those physical activities.

Art:
This Is one of my most exciting times of the Year.  All grades are looking at Dr. Seuss as an artist and author, and creating a work of art inspired by him.  We will then be working on an Op art unit where every grade will learn about Op art and create their own optical illusion.

Music:
Kindergarten-2nd Grade Parents:
We have been working hard on our "expression" unit. We are putting feelings and describing words to the music we hear by using our describing words we are using in class. Our Spring "Making a Difference" concert is on  April 28th. 2nd Grade will perform at  5:30, 1st Grade will perform at  6:00 and Kindergarten will perform at  6:30.  All concerts will take place in the Sweeny Gym. Please feel free to invite friends and family to this exciting evening!

3rd-5th Grade Parents:
We have successfully reviewed our rhythmic and melodic terms from Unit 3 and have started to organize our music into different forms and genres. The musicians are able to perform or listen to a piece of music, state their opinion about the song and give facts to support the opinion they've created. This is a fun activity to participate in as a family, whether it be in the car listening to the radio or maybe your favorite "jingle" during a commercial break, it gives the musicians the chance to state their opinions and verbally support their answers.

I am excited to announce that we start recorders the week of  March 14th! A letter went home last week with all the information needed.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concern. Please remember that all students are asked to purchase their own recorders and once recorders are at school for music class, they must stay at school until the conclusion of our recorder unit in May.

Library:
The first week of February, students in the library embarked on an exciting adventure of researching a topic. Students are researching the following topics:  kindergarten  - the solar system;  first grade - zoo animals; second grade - rainforest animals;  third grade - biographies;  fourth grade - civil war; fifth grade - simple machines. Through the research process students learn how to cite books, Internet and encyclopedia sources, find information in a non-fiction text, and read to find information. We will continue working on this until about spring break.
