Grandparents Appreciation Day
On Wednesday we had over 100 grandparents on our campus for Mass and lunch. We set up a photo frame and will send out the photos to our grandparents. It was wonderful to see so many grandparents enjoying spending time with their grandchildren. Campus Ministry provided flowers for the grandparents and ASB provided lunch.

Student Appreciation Day
Student Appreciation began Monday after school with Mr. Mark Brown BBQing hot dogs for the kids. On Tuesday students had free dress and Mr. Blaine Geissel rented a giant inflatable obstacle course, decorated the campus with posters, had cookies at break, and waters and sodas at lunch - all to show our appreciation for our students.

Message from
Myka Peck
Principal
Dear Parents -
This week we celebrated Catholic schools Week at Garces and it has been a great week! We celebrated our community, our students, our grandparents, our teachers, and today, our parents. I wanted to take a moment to say thank you for entrusting your child's high school education to all of us at Garces. I appreciate all you sacrifice to send your child to Garces. For many of you, it's a trip across town and you make it every day, sometimes twice a day. For others, you take time away from your family to help us run the concession stand, man the ticket booth, or help with Bingo in order to provide your child with a Garces education. All of you give your time and your talents, especially at our special events. And no other school supports their students like all of you do at our Garces activities. It gives me so much pleasure to see so many of you at our games, concerts, night rallies, and theater productions. Thank you for all you do in support of our school, our students, and our teachers. Thank you for helping to make our school a special place.
May there always be a Garces.
Myka Peck

Y
our student has received his or her PSAT score report. What are the next steps?
1) Visit
studentscores.collegeboard.org to create a College Board account and get your full PSAT score report.
2) Create a Khan Academy account at
satpractive.org and link it to your College Board account to get free, personalized practice for the SAT.
3) Register to take the SAT in March, May or June. Spring of the junior year is the perfect time to take the SAT-students can take advantage of the PSAT experience, and they will still have time to practice, increase their skills and test again if they want to improve their scores..

Got Financial Aid? How to compare awards.
As college decisions begin to arrive for the class of 2016, those who receive financial aid will also get their "award letter." Colleges know not to bury the lead, so you'll often see a bold line of text summarizing the total award package. Some colleges do a much better job of explaining this than others do, but that number doesn't necessarily mean you can just subtract it from the sticker price of the college. There are three types of financial aid, and they are not created equal: (1) grants and scholarships (which are free money that doesn't have to be paid back), (2) loans (which must be paid back), and (3) work-study program. That's why the awards are typically called "packages." The rest of the letter should explain the breakdown for the recipient. Also, if your student submitted the FAFSA, please don't forget to have them return the Cal Grant form to his or her counselor as soon as possible. The form is available in the Counseling Center. |
