Shabbat Shalom
From Rav Tomer Ronen
This week's parsha, Mishpatim, opens with
ואלא המשפטים אשר תשים לפניהם״" ("and these are the ordinances you should set before them").  Rashi explains " אשר תשים לפניהם" to mean like a table, set and ready for a person to dine. So too, Hashem commanded Moshe to teach Bnei Yisrael, not only the words of the Torah, but also its full meaning and explanation. Just as we carefully

prepare and place food on a table to offer it to guests, so too with Moshe's preparation and presentation of the Torah to Bnei Yisrael

At the end of the parsha, Moshe Rabbeinu reads the Torah aloud to the people,  Sefer HaBrit as written by his hand. In addition, we learn that Moshe wrote twelve more sifrei Torah, one for each tribe. Even though he gave the Torah to the whole nation and explained it to all, he recognized the importance of each tribe having its own sefer to relate to individually and to teach each one in its own way according to its own needs.

From both of these episodes, we derive important lessons related to education. First is the importance of constantly reviewing and sharpening our knowledge and teaching of Torah, in order to ensure that our students internalize it. In addition, the mode of education needs to be like a personalized Sefer Torah, a set table, carefully prepared for each individual student in order to challenge, excite, and engage.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rav Tomer Ronen
Exploring the Meaning of Tefillah
BPY's bnot sherut, Lilach and Shira, have been helping our elementary school students explore and internalize the meaning of their tefillot through interactive games, creative activities, and meaningful discussions - all in Hebrew of course! Click the video link below to enjoy a photo slideshow they prepared highlighting some of the special tefillah activities they have been doing with the children.

Third Graders Celebrate יום פיג'מות!
It was cold and snowy outside but third graders and their teachers got to stay warm and cozy inside....in their pajamas! The students were celebrating half a year of speaking exclusively in Hebrew during Hebrew class. They enjoyed a festive classroom breakfast - including all Hebrew table conversation - and even watched a Hebrew episode of "The Magic Schoolbus." A great way to spend a wintry day.... kol hakavod kitah gimmel!
"Punxsutawney Phyllis" Visits BPY Early Childhood
In honor of Groundhog Day, BPY's own "Punxsutawney Phyllis" visited our youngest students to teach them about predictions and graphing. Each student predicted whether spring would come early this year and our special visitor helped them graph and compare the results. More children think spring is coming soon - we hope they are right!
Focus On...Afternoon Adventures!
French crepes....in Hebrew! Morah Avital's baking chug made these delicious treats in Afternoon Adventures this week, while practicing their Hebrew language skills. Bon appetit and בתיאבון!
Around BPY Early Childhood
Gan Parparim (T) began their winter unit by playing with snow! They had so much fun filling cups with snow and watching it melt in their classroom.

Gan Kochavim (NA) stayed warm and cozy inside by playing a fun winter word game!

Around BPY Elementary School
First graders explored the great outdoors this week, playing in the snow during recess and searching for animal tracks in the woods next to our school, guided by helpful tips from Morah Jean!

It's Tangram-mania in second grade! Students used Tangrams, an ancient Chinese puzzle, as part of their study of geometry. To print out your own Tangram set to use at home, click on this link:
http://math.about.com/library/tangram.pdf

Third graders went on a treasure hunt to see how many simple machines they could find in and around their classroom. Then they tagged the machines they found with descriptions of how they work.

Fifth graders got to show their team spirit AND apply their study of fractions, statistics, units of measure, and more during a special Super Bowl tailgate math party led by Morah Stephanie!

Around BPY Junior High
Sixth graders selected topics of interest from their units on Mesopotamia or A Long Walk to Water and planned creative ways to present them to the classmates. The finished products included a game about the tribes in Sudan, a digital presentation about water scarcity, a well made from brownies and graham crackers, and ziggurats built with Lego, Minecraft, and cardboard boxes. What an incredible opportunity to showcase their creativity, apply their learning, and have fun!

Resilience Revisited Part I
by Stanley Fischman
Boston College psychology professor Peter Gray*, having been invited to join a faculty meeting to discuss the decline in resilience among students, recently reported some amazing revelations. It seems that students are seeking counseling for issues that not long ago would have simply been considered a nuisance.

He cited an example of two students who sought counseling because they saw a mouse in their apartment, and who then called police to set a mousetrap for them.

More ominous are the many reports of students who are so emotionally fragile that they view a low grade as "the end of the world." It is becoming common for university faculty members to give higher grades to avoid dealing with these emotionally charged situations. He says that students have "... an increased tendency to see a poor grade as reason to complain rather than as reason to study more, or more effectively."

2015-16 Junior High Basketball Season
BPY's boys and girls junior high basketball teams kick off their 2015-16 season next week!

To help them start their season strong, we will be holding School Spirit Day on Tuesday, February 11! Students and staff in grades 1-8 are encouraged to come to school dressed in their BPY gear or in the BPY colors (blue and green).

Creative flair is welcome! Please note that there will be no uniforms required that day but dress code guidelines still apply.

BPY students, parents, and staff members are always invited to attend any of our BPY basketball games and cheer on our teams. The game schedule can be found on the BPY calendar on the BPY website and on the BPY app or by clicking here.

TeachNJS Action Alert:
Secure Schools for ALL New Jersey Children

EMAIL GOVERNOR CHRISTIE TODAY
If you have not done so already, please email New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and ask him  to give all students equal state funding for security, nursing aid, technology and textbooks in his fiscal 2016-17 budget, regardless of what kind of school they attend.

Currently, each non-public school student receives only $198 from the State of New Jersey for educational programs and services, which is far below the $20,000 average cost to New Jersey taxpayers for each public school student. The funding that the state has budgeted for fiscal year 2015-2016 doesn't provide children who don't go to public schools the basic services necessary for our children to succeed, including adequate security during these very dangerous times.

Our children's safety and basic learning tools are no less important than those who attend public school. There should be no difference in the security and services funding they receive.

To effectively advocate for this legislation, we need EVERY member of our community to take two minutes to send an email to Governor Christie by clicking here.  These two minutes could help bring in millions of dollars of much needed services and equipment to our schools. Thank you!

CALL GOVERNOR CHRISTIE ON TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 9
To reinforce our message, our action alert emails (above) need to be followed up with phone calls to the governor's office. Please join Teach NJS in phase II as we make c alls to Governor Chris Christie, asking him  to provide funding parity for non-public school students in the line items of security, nursing aid, technology and textbooks in his 2016-2017 budget.

On Tuesday, February 9th please use the following number to reach the Governor  1-800-640-9089.

Please use the following as a suggested script when calling the governor's office:

Hi, my name is____. I am from____, NJ calling to urge Governor Chris Christie to provide the same amount of security funding of $138, as well as parity in technology, nursing, and textbook funding, for my child(ren) and for all non-public school students as is provided for public school students in the FY 2017 budget. I appreciate you taking the time to speak with me and thank the governor for all his support. Have a good day.

Teach NJS applauds your efforts in securing more funding for our children!
