Self-Development of People in Baltimore (SDOP)
The offering from One Great Hour of Sharing is divided among three different ministries: Presbyterian Hunger Program (PDA), Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA), and Self-Development of People (SDOP).
Self-Development of People is a unique program of PC(USA) that was developed in 1970 to work toward the self-development of economically poor, oppressed, and disadvantaged people who own, control and benefit directly from projects that promote long-term change in their lives and communities. A portion of these funds is directed back to Presbyteries for local projects. In existence for several years, the Presbytery of Baltimore SDOP Committee has awarded many grants to groups who meet the criteria set forth by the SDOP mandate of empowerment.
In 2015 three groups whose work is centered in West Baltimore were awarded SDOP grants at the February Presbytery Gathering.
1)
Youth in Business is an offshoot of the Jubilee Arts project with which you may be familiar. Kids have been painting murals all over the city. YIB is a group of kids that have formed to learn strategies for marketing and selling the creations that they make which includes tee shirts, ceramic mugs and flower pots. ($4000)
2)
Baltimore Youth Organizing Project is a group of young people ages 14-24 who are developing a collective voice in Baltimore City. They will be using community organizing trainings and meetings to push the agenda that they feel is important. At their last meeting they had 84 young folks attend and are sponsoring a meeting with all of the mayoral candidates. ($4000)
3) Touch of Class Cleaning: This group of low-wage workers and returning citizens have banded together to form a company that cleans homes in foreclosure and clean outs for demolitions. We funded them in 2010 to get started and with our remaining funds in 2015 we decided to assist with the hiring of a CPA to help them navigate the process of acquiring minority-owned business status to open the door to many more government contracts. ($900)
While your giving supports the national Self-Development of People, you can see how programs locally are also benefiting from One Great Hour of Sharing. Help us to keep this Ministry alive by generously giving to OGHS this Easter season!
Special Offerings
A gift to One Great Hour of Sharing enables the Church to share God's love with our neighbors-in-need here and around the world. Most congregations receive "OGHS" on Easter Sunday, Passion/Palm Sunday or both; while many others receive it throughout Lent.
If your church has not participated in a while please consider giving in this Holy Season.
Learn how your congregation can help sustain PC(USA) ministries and programs like One Great Hour of Sharing Offering; or, share ways that your church promotes Special Offerings. C
