Oakland A's veteran catcher Stephen Vogt has been relegated to designated hitter duties during spring training while he rehabs a surgically-repaired right elbow but Vogt is driving the ball deep, most recently on Saturday when he hit another home run versus the Texas Rangers at Surprise Stadium in Surprise, Az. Vogt now sports a gaudy .545 batting average and 1.979 OPS. The A's open the regular season at home versus the Chicago White Sox on Monday, Apr. 4.

| Few UltraCyclists have a passion for the Race Across America (RAAM) as deep as Ricardo Arap (center). The Brazilian made his first RAAM appearance in 1998 as a member of a two-rider team with fellow Brazilian and Ironman triathlete, Alexandre Ribeiro. After over a decade of team efforts, Arap decided to become only the third Brazilian to finish RAAM as a solo (the late Claudio Clarindo and Julio Paterlini being the only others). His 2014 RAAM had a memorable start--his young son joined him as they pedaled away from the start line but Arap's effort was thwarted by that year's horrific heat; he withdrew after reaching Parker, Az, just 286 miles from the start. Things went better last year when Arap made it over halfway, reaching Ft. Scott, Kansas, before withdrawing. He's registered for another solo go this year. Nine Innings, Count 'em, Nine!

Nineteen fifty-two was my senior year in high school. I was already a professional writer by then, covering schoolboy sports for major dailies in New York and Philadelphia, Newark and Trenton, New Jersey. I had also been recruited as official scorer for our school's varsity baseball team.
Prep school sports were pretty hot in our region. My own school,
Bordentown Military Institute, fielded an above-average team year after year, but the real New Jersey powerhouse was a school in Newark called
St. Benedict's Prep. By the spring of '52 the Gray Bees had run up an amazing record of 63 consecutive wins. I don't know for sure, but I suspect that record stands to this day.
Ground rules and general baseball rules were pretty standard in our world, although for some reason some teams played seven inning games and others played the more standard nine. As it happened, the Gray Bees played seven and our team--the Cadets--played nine. When teams with different attitudes on the issue met, the home team got its way. Not unlike interleague play and the designated hitter rule.
One bright afternoon shortly before the end of the school year, the Gray Bees arrived in their team bus to take on our guys, the Cadets. The result was a spectacular pitchers' duel. Our pitcher was a skinny fireballer named Harry Helmer. I don't remember the Gray Bees' pitcher's name, but he was every bit as effective as Helmer, mixing curves and change-ups. It was a classic match of junk versus power.
Somewhere around the middle of the game--forgive a codger's fuzzy memory--the Gray Bees put up a run. And it held up through the fifth, sixth, seventh innings, and the eighth. Bottom of the ninth our guys came to bat.
Our left fielder was a left-handed Venezuelan exchange student named Mauricio Chacron. He was built like Babe Ruth and he played baseball like Babe Ruth. He could hit the ball a country mile, then totter around the base path on his spindly legs.
Mauricio came to bat in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, the score still Gray Bees 1 and Cadets 0. The Gray Bees' pitcher hung a curve that didn't break and Mauricio slammed it over the right fielder's head. Any other batter would have had a triple or even a home run--we had no outfield fence and the ball could roll and roll and roll but Mauricio was something of a lead-foot and by the time he chugged into second base the Gray Bees' outfielder had chased the ball down and returned it to the infield.
Up came our catcher, a brilliant athlete named Dink Tindle. Dink was a halfback on our football team and a shooting guard in basketball season. Maybe the Gray Bees' pitcher was tiring, maybe their manager should have lifted him for their closer, but instead the manager chose to leave his starter on the mound to face Dink.
Maybe it was the Gray Bees' catcher's fault for calling for another curve but in fact he did. The pitcher hung another one and Dink hit it to dead center for the proverbial country mile. Remember, no fence in the outfield; the ball could roll forever.
Mauricio came chugging around the bases, huffing and puffing and almost staggering as he ran. Dink started around the base path and was a much faster runner
The Gray Bees' center fielder finally caught up with Dink's ball and relayed it to the second baseman who relayed it to the catcher. Dink had actually caught up to Maricio halfway between third base and home but he didn't dare pass him. Under baseball rules he would have been called out.
Do I really remember this, or have the decades colored my recollection? I actually saw this--or at least, I think I actually saw this--Dink reached down and delivered a ferocious goose to Mauricio. Mauricio left his feet and sailed into a flying, head-first slide. He collided with the Gray Bees' catcher and the ball went flying out of the catcher's hands. Mauricio flopped onto the plate, crawled off it, and Dink jumped on it. They'd just scored the tying and winning runs. Final score:

I headed back to what was laughingly referred to as our press office in those days, wrote my story, and put it on the wire to all our clients. Several major papers in New York and Philadelphia ran my brief copy in their Sunday editions. The
Trenton Times ran a slightly longer version that I'd provided to them. I wrote up a much longer version which the weekly
Bordentown Register ran the following Friday.
And the prestigious
Newark Star-Ledger ran its own story. Oh, they got the box-score right and they got the final score right, but the story was a nonstop exercise in sour grapes. It seems the Gray Bees team was accustomed to playing seven inning games. It wasn't their fault that those thugs at
Bordentown insisted on playing nine and the Gray Bees' pitcher was exhausted after seven innings. He'd pitched a beautiful shutout game and he deserved the win and
Bordentown had insisted on playing those two more innings and stole the win from the brave Gray Bees.
Not only that, they'd broken the Gray Bees' winning streak. What should have been their 64
th consecutive win was their first loss in many years. Somehow I didn't feel sorry for them.
Well, where are Harry Helmer and Mauricio Chacron and Dink Tindle today? I have no idea and no idea if they're even residing on this planet. But wherever they are, I'm sure they remember that day in 1952 when they played a full nine inning baseball game and won it fair and square,
2 runs to 1.

Yep, it was Red Smith and Stanley Woodward and me, except they got lots of space and bylines and mug shots and I got paid by the column-inch.

I learned a lot about professionalism: respecting deadlines, writing with clarity, economy, accuracy and fairness. Those days taught me precious lessons and left me many treasured memories."
