Lent

The church season of Lent, the 40 days (minus Sundays) preceding Easter, is the perfect time to slow down, open your eyes, and see God working God's wonders in you and all around you. There will be a number of ministries going on at Emmanuel Church to support you in this time of reflection.

First, pick up a copy of Living Well through Lent 2016, edited by Scott Stoner. This devotional booklet provides short daily meditations under the theme Letting Go with All Your Heart, Soul, Strength, and Mind. Fellow parishioners have used these meditations before and rave about them. They are provided to us free from the Diocese. Copies are available at both entrances to our worship space.

On Ash Wednesday, February 10, come and worship and receive, if you desire, the imposition of ashes, a sign and symbol of our mortal humanness that is so in need of God's love and forgiveness. Services will be at 9:30 am and 7 pm.

On the five following Wednesdays, beginning February 17, Pastor Susan will be leading Soup, Sandwiches, and Scripture from 6:30 to 7:30 pm in Beaudway Hall. Come at 6:30 pm for soup and sandwiches. Thanks to Penny Longo, Jean Owen, and Lisa Enright for providing food for us. At 7 pm, choir members may head up to the choir room for practice. Or stay with Pastor Susan for study of the gospel of Luke. Luke is the primary gospel that you will hear throughout the coming year on Sunday mornings. For a half hour on these Wednesday evenings, we will look at some of the unique stories of Luke, the choreography of Luke, the passion story according to Luke, and more. One evening will be devoted to a creative expression of our understanding of Luke, another to a lectio divina based on a text from Luke.

As you are able, be part of these activities during Lent, enriching and deepening your faith.

Internationally Acclaimed Christ Church Cathedral Choristers seek Lodging Here

As one of only two sites on their spring tour, the Christ Church Cathedral Choristers will be as excited to perform at Emmanuel as we will be to host them.  Part of our association with this special visit is the opportunity to host this esteemed group in our homes during their Chicago stay.  The 24 young men who sing, ages 9-18, are accompanied by several support staff including organist, conductor, chaperones and others.  We'll put them all up in 22 rooms around our community and hope that you can open your doors to be a host.

Boys must be assigned to hosts in pairs, and hosts for boys are required to take Keeping God's Children Safe (really easy online, and if you've already taken, you're good).  Hosts will be asked to provide breakfast and a ride to Emmanuel in the morning.  Dates are Sunday April 3 through Wednesday April 6 (3 nights).

If you'd like to take part in this great experience please contact George at (312) 835-2526 or [email protected].  There is also a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board by the sacristy.

Sunday Service Project, February 28

Between worship services on February 28, we will be putting together baggies of toiletries for those in need. Please bring in small, travel sizes of soap, shampoo, lotion, and toothpaste, and place them in the baskets at the entryways. Perfect are all those complimentary toiletries that you have picked up and brought home from vacation stays. On the 28th, we will be packaging them with greeting cards decorated by our children. We will share these with the Quinn Center and other agencies.

antiquePlanning for the 2016 Spring Antique & Vintage Market that will be held on April 16 - 17, 2016 is well underway.  This is our 60th Annual Antique Show and we have something very special in store for you!

Let's first talk about what is changing with this year's event:
  • We are re-branding the show and adding a Vintage Market. Have you seen our new marketing materials? We are making this change for three reasons:
    • Our operating budget depends on the proceeds from this event
    • Guest attendance has been declining in recent years
    • Interest in fine, collectible antiques has also declined.  Millennials are interested in affordable, vintage and repurposed items for themselves and their homes.
  • The timing of the event has been changed from February to April.
  • The days of the Spring Antique and Vintage Market have changed from a Thursday, Friday and Saturday event to a Saturday and Sunday event.  We hope this change will bring increased attendance and make it easier for our parishioners and friends of Emmanuel to volunteer.
  • We are requesting one service on Sunday, April 17, 2016 with the event opening immediately after the service concludes.
  • The admission fee has been reduced from $10.00 per person to $6.00 per person. This change in admission price aligns well with other Antique and Vintage Market events in our area.
  • We have also standardized our booth rental prices.  Booth prices are now based on the floor in which the booth is located, with the main floor being the most expensive.  These changes are based on events similar in size to ours.
  • We will no longer have a Thursday night Bistro or Friday evening dinner.  These events will be replaced with a Saturday evening party beginning at 6:30pm after the event is closed.  We hope you will come, relax and celebrate 60 years of the Antique Show!
  • Besides the Patron's List, we are also planning to ask for business sponsorship to help defray the cost of this wonderful two-day event.  Do you know of a business that would like to be a sponsor?
  • In addition to print advertising, we will be focusing our efforts on social media...please LIKE and SHARE our posts on Facebook!
  • There will be a big emphasis on SPRING at the show!!  Our dealers have been asked to bring merchandise that fits into a spring theme. We also hope to have plants and garden elements for sale during the event.

Well, that certainly is a lot of changes! So, what is NOT changing?
  • Everyone will have an opportunity to help defray the costs of the show by donating to the Patron's List.
  • We will serve delicious home cooked food during the Saturday Café and Sunday Café, as well at the Sunday Brunch.
  • We will sell event tickets in advance via in person, via mail and on-line.  Help us save on postage costs by paying for and picking up entrance tickets during the Annual Meeting on January 24th.  Each envelope will contain five tickets for $30.00.
  • Bakers Shelf - our tweens and teens will be selling baked goods at the Baker's Shelf.  Proceeds from the Baker's Shelf will support our Youth Group programs.  Remember, "The more you bake, the more we make!"  Thank you!
  • Our very profitable Treasure Trove will once again be located in the former Tea Room.  We need your treasures!  Contact Molly Salisbury and Lanna Roman for more information about items needed.
Increasing attendance at our show can make a HUGE difference in our profitability, and the profitability of our 30+ dealers.  Please help us to promote the event! Bring your friends, neighbors and family members to shop and dine with us!

Very truly yours,
Vicki Roe, Jean Owen, Sue Jasiak and Stephanie Morse

Saint of the week:
Feast of the Presentation of our Lord Jesus Christ
Feast of the Purification of the Virgin
Candlemas Day

Feast day: February 2

Counting forward from December 25 as Day One, we find that Day Forty is February 2. A Jewish woman is in semi-seclusion for 40 days after giving birth to a son, and accordingly it is on February 2 that we celebrate the coming of Mary and Joseph with the infant Jesus to the Temple at Jerusalem to offer sacrifice, both on behalf of Mary and on behalf of Jesus as a first-born male.
Because an old reading for this festival contains the line (Zephaniah 1:12), "I will search Jerusalem with candles," the day is also known as Candlemas, and sometimes observed with a candle-lit procession.

The Origin of Feast Days

In the Catholic and Episcopal churches, most saints have specially designated feast days which are associated with a specific day of the year, and these are referred to as the saint's feast day. The feast days first arose from the very early Christian custom of the annual commemoration of martyrs on the dates of their deaths, at the same time celebrating their birth into heaven.
