Greetings,

As you know, during the Mid-Winter Board and Mini-Congress 2016 it was announced that The National Baptist Convention of America and Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Society, in partnership with the American Red Cross has formed a Disaster Services Network, wherein Lott Carey and NBCA will help vulnerable communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from large scale disasters.

Below please find an update from the American Red Cross regarding the recent severe weather in the South-Central region.

OPERATIONAL UPDATE: Southern Flooding - March 13, 2016
 
 
Dear Colleague,
 
Heavy to intense rainfall and thunderstorms have impacted the South-Central U.S. since March 8, 2016. More than 20 inches of record rainfall has hit the states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas. Moderate to major river flooding is anticipated to continue into the week. Some highlights from the latest FEMA Situation Report follow.
 
Louisiana
  • Evacuations (mandatory and voluntary) exceed 10,000 statewide
  • 3 confirmed fatalities
  • 5,000 customers without power (peak 32,000)
  • 16 shelters open with 479 occupants*
  • Numerous roads closed statewide to include I-49 and I-12; I-20 reopened in both directions, ramps to secondary roads remain closed in many areas 
  • Boil Water Advisories issued in several areas across the state 
Mississippi
  • 620 homes impacted by flooding statewide; approximately 200 of those have major damage
  • Approximately 350 roads/18 bridges impacted (minor - major damage - statewide)
  • City of Jackson Water Treatment Plant damaged in Hinds County - unknown impacts
  • 9 shelters open with 27 occupants*
* Shelter numbers and populations are fluctuating. These numbers are from the latest FEMA Situation Report. 
 
The American Red Cross is responding in the region in close coordination with partners to provide assistance to individuals and families impacted by the storms. Red Cross has connected with National Baptist Convention of America, Lott Carey, the Southern Baptists, the NAACP, the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and many others to deliver services and resources. Activities include:
  • Sheltering, feeding, Health and Mental Health Services
  • Bulk distribution of relief items and recruitment of volunteers to assist
  • Direct client assistance
  • Damage assessments
Across the country, Red Cross is actively responding to the following:

Active Operations: 10 (this includes LA, TX, MS)
Shelters open: 42
Population in shelters: 329
