Updates from Mrs. Mitchell and Mrs. Brown

Mrs.  Br own and myself would like to take a moment to celebrate our amazing counselors at Lyon during National School Counselor week, February 1st-5th.  As many of you know they do an amazing job each and every day by supporting students, parents, and teachers.  From opening car doors each morning to finding services to assist families with monetary or medical needs, Lyon counselors have kind hearts and a passion for Lyon.  Please take a moment and thank Mrs. Peters or Mrs. Bowers for their efforts in  assisting so many in the Republic Community !
BSIP Update
Lyon's Attendance

Lyon is excited to announce we reached our attendance goal, with 96.04% attendance for the month of January.  At the beginning of the month, Mrs. Mitchell and Mrs. Brown shared they were willing to be duct taped to the wall if Lyon students' attendance rate was at least 95%.  Mrs. Brown was cheering on K-2, and Mrs. Mitchell was rooting for 3rd-5th.
Looking at overall attendance, 3rd-5th attendance percentage came in higher at 96.2%.
Mrs. Mitchell will celebrate by allowing ALL Lyon students to assist in duct taping her to the wall!  Thank you to all Lyon families for working to make sure your child is at school each day ready to learn!
Congratulations also goes to 1st grade for having the highest percentage of attendance this month, with 97.24%.

P.E.: We kicked off the annual Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser this past Monday. Lyon set a goal to save 40 lives by raising $2,000 during our annual
Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser.  The donations benefit the American Heart Association.  Lyon students will be participating in this fundraiser the entire month of February. For more information click

Library/Computer Lab
It is research time in the library!  We are using many different sources to locate information about our different topics.  Ask your child what or who they are researching and find out what new information they've found.
In Computer Lab students are  learning how to research this same topic using the computer! Each grade level will complete different tasks to help them learn how to find the information they are looking for on the computer.

Music:
  • Students in Kindergarten and 1st have already been working on their concert songs.  2nd grade will begin in the next couple of weeks.  The K-1-2 concerts will be on ROAR Night which is tentatively scheduled for April 28th.
  • 3rd grades have been composing rhythm using their names and playing them on xylophones and metallophones.
  • Students in 4th and 5th grades may now order recorders.  They are $6 each. Students were given letters with an order form this week.  We start playing in March after Spring Break.
Art:
  • 4th and 5th grade artists are using radial balance and complex patterns to create mandalas.
  • 3rd grade artists learned about artist Henri Rousseau and created tiger collages from painted paper.
  • 2nd grade artists are using warm and cool colors to create Jim Dine inspired hearts.
  • 1st grade artists are learning to cut symmetrical shapes.
  • Kindergarten artists are learning the primary colors.

Counselor Connection
Mrs. Peters Trying on Scuba Gear

We were excited to have DiVentures come and talk to our students about Water Safety and a variety of careers having to do with water.  The students enjoyed seeing the SCUBA instructors equipment along with watching videos and looking at pictures from dives around the world.

February 1st-5th is National School Counselor Week.  This week is set aside as an opportunity for us to say thank you to our community members, families, staff and students who help support our counseling program each and every day.  Our job would be impossible without your encouragement. We appreciate you!!

   A Note from Nurse Lisa

We are having a very mild flu season at Lyon Elementary. Greene County and the state of Missouri cases are minimal also. We will continue to be diligent with our influenza surveillance. Please continue to encourage your student/s to use good hand washing practices. In addition, covering coughs/sneezes, not sharing food or drink, etc. are easy ways to help prevent the spread of germs.

Are you looking for ways to get involved?
PTO is an easy way to be involved in your child's school success. PTO is looking for new officers to begin in the 2016-2017 school year.  If you are interested or would like to learn more about being an officer, please CLICK HERE for more information.  You may also contact our current president, Andrea, at [email protected].

We ask for your participation in our next meeting which will be held on Monday, February 22nd at 6:00pm.  This past year PTO helped provide the following items for our school:
  • BBQ grill for use at special events
  • snacks for fall classroom parties
  • storage containers for Kindergarten math stations
  • materials for 1st grade teachers to use for improved letter formation and path of movement
  • food for teachers on Grandparents' night
  • Special treats for teachers prior to Winter Break
  • Celebrations for classroom competitions for PTO memberships and mum sales
We need YOU to help make a difference at Lyon!

Literacy Connection

Reading Fluently
Have you ever watched a space show on T.V. and listened to a robot talk?   Its voice sounds cold, choppy, and mechanical. At the beginning it is fun to listen to, but after awhile it becomes annoying.
Often when children are learning to read and they read out loud, they sound like robots.  They are looking at every letter and word so carefully that they sound staccato.  They are reading word by word by word by word.  This is also how they comprehend what they are reading.  They comprehend in small parts rather than the whole story.
In order to help a child break the robot reading habit, tell your child to make his or her reading sound like talking.  Then, read a sentence or two for your child to model it for them.  Then, talk about how reading should sound like talking.  WIth practice, your child will realize that it is actually easier to read fluently than it is to read word by word.

"Souper Bowl"

Lyon Leaders collected over 600 pounds of canned soup/misc. goods for People Helping People!  Mrs. Goddard's third grade class took the prize by collecting more than 100 canned items!  Thank you to all who donated to such a great cause.

Lyon is committed to building a community of learners who are productive, responsible and compassionate.  Please let us know if we can assist your child in any way.
