AIA Is Growing - Invite Your Colleagues to Join!
AIA's Ohio Valley Region has received the charge of increasing its membership by 6% over the next 9 months. You can help these efforts by spreading the word to your colleagues who are not yet members and educating them about the professional and personal benefits that AIA membership provides. Watch/share this video where OVR members (including CKC President, Portia Shields, AIA) discuss the many opportunities for community engagement, networking, continuing education and leadership that the AIA provides. All of these are critical in growing and maintaining a successful career in architecture, so encourage others to Join Now!

High Performance Buildings Workshop
The AIA KY/KY NEED/DEDI High Performance Buildings Workshop will be held on Tuesday, March 15, from 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, at the Kentucky Community Technical College System Office. Throughout the past decade, this workshop has focused on market transformation - integrating energy efficient strategies and new technologies in the design, construction and operation of Kentucky's public schools. Today, Kentucky's schools have set new standards of efficiency, earned national recognition, and saved millions of taxpayer dollars.

This year, we build on that success by sharing that message with all public officials. Public officials recognize they must inspire innovation and creativity in their communities to maintain services while meeting the demands of a changing economy. This workshop is a unique opportunity for them to hear the success stories from fellow Kentuckians and learn how to transform your community through energy efficient, high-performance building strategies.

This workshop is for city, county, and state officials, school leaders, architects, energy professionals, owners and operators of public buildings, and anyone interested in seeking ways to introduce energy saving strategies in public facilities. Attendees may earn up to 6 AIA LU/HSW and will:
  • Learn about the financial benefits of energy efficiency and sound energy management practices
  • Discuss measures that can improve new and existing buildings
  • Collaborate with energy professionals, designers and engineers
  • Listen to other public officials as they share their success stories in their communities

Louisville SDAT Focuses on Neighborhood Revitalization
The AIA's Sustainable Design Assessment Team (SDAT) recently completed a study of Louisville's Russell neighborhood. Once the boyhood home of Muhammad Ali, the neighborhood has a proud history as a cultural hub for the entire city prior to urban renewal. However, today it exhibits classic indicators of how neighborhood inequality can play out at the local level. The SDAT has developed a strategy focused on re-connecting the neighborhood to the city physically, economically, and socially. To learn more about this project, you can view this short film, view the SDAT's presentation and review their final report.

Kudos to Mitchell Kersting, AIA, who was AIA Central KY's representative on the SDAT!

IDP/NCARB News
Sights on Success
The Sights on Success program resumed in January after an extended holiday break and, as we approach the halfway mark, we remain optimistic about the level of engagement from our program participants and the results that they are reporting to date. We have recorded a 75% pass rate in those reporting their exam progress, which is exciting news for Kentucky's architectural community!

In addition to the dedication that our participants have demonstrated, AIA Kentucky's professional members and allied members have shown a generous commitment to supporting our emerging professionals in their pursuit of licensure, and we continue to be grateful for the provision of office space to gather in, volunteer time to lead workshops and monetary donations for food and beverage. We would specifically like to thank CMW Architects and Engineers for hosting and leading January's workshop on Site Planning and Design (dinner provide by Element Design) and Gray Construction who will be hosting February's workshop on Building Design and Construction Systems this Saturday, 2/6. Breakfast for this workshop will be provided by BLUE Energy Group, one of AIA Kentucky's valued Allied Benefactors.

Stay tuned for additional updates and more good news!

The Last Word
I always love it when I see recognition of AIA members and their work in the news! For example:
  • Last year's AIA Kentucky design awards winners were showcased in last week's AIArchitect e-newsletter that is sent to all AIA members across the country. View here.
  • Several AIA members were included in Business First of Louisville's "20 People to Know in Construction" special section published on January 15, including: Mark Trier, AIA of JRA Architects, Brad Stengel, AIA of Stengel Hill Architecture and John Stewart, AIA of Encompass Develop Design and Construct. View here.
  • Business First of Louisville also ran a very nice article on David Proffitt, AIA in BusinessFirst, upon his departure from the Louisville Metro Board of Zoning Adjustment and the Metro Planning Commission. View here.
  • A home renovation designed by Architect Anne Del Prince, AIA was featured as the Home of the Day in Business First this week. View here.
Whenever either YOU or YOUR FIRM is recognized in the press or other media - either print, TV, or online - please share that news with us, so we can share with others via our social media outlets! Send to Member Outreach Coordinator Kelly Ives, AIA.
