High Performance Buildings Workshop
|
|
The AIA KY/KY NEED/DEDI High Performance Buildings Workshop will be held on Tuesday, March 15, from 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, at the Kentucky Community Technical College System Office. Throughout the past decade, this workshop has focused on market transformation - integrating energy efficient strategies and new technologies in the design, construction and operation of Kentucky's public schools. Today, Kentucky's schools have set new standards of efficiency, earned national recognition, and saved millions of taxpayer dollars.
This year, we build on that success by sharing that message with all public officials. Public officials recognize they must inspire innovation and creativity in their communities to maintain services while meeting the demands of a changing economy. This workshop is a unique opportunity for them to hear the success stories from fellow Kentuckians and learn how to transform your community through energy efficient, high-performance building strategies.
This workshop is for city, county, and state officials, school leaders, architects, energy professionals, owners and operators of public buildings, and anyone interested in seeking ways to introduce energy saving strategies in public facilities. Attendees may earn up to 6 AIA LU/HSW and will:
- Learn about the financial benefits of energy efficiency and sound energy management practices
- Discuss measures that can improve new and existing buildings

David Carter, AIA
of Sherman Carter Barnhart, AIA has agreed to serve a committee formed by the KY Department of Housing Buildings and Construction to review the 2015 International Building Code (IBC) for adoption or revision of the Kentucky Building Code. Van Meter Pettit, AIA of VMP Architect in Lexington has agreed to serve on a similar committee that will review the 2015 International Residential Code (IRC) for possible adoption or revision to the Kentucky Residential Code. Any suggestions, comments or questions may be directed to Van Meter or David.
We recently said a fond farewell to David Proffitt, AIA, a long-time member and leader in both AIA Kentucky and the Central Kentucky Chapter, who will be moving to Nashville, TN. In addition to his legacy of committed service to the profession, David leaves behind openings on the KSA PAC, the Louisville Planning Commission and the Board of Zoning. We strongly encourage our members to consider filling these positions, and we wish David all the best!

Louisville SDAT Focuses on Neighborhood Revitalization
The AIA's Sustainable Design Assessment Team (SDAT) recently completed a study of Louisville's Russell neighborhood. Once the boyhood home of Muhammad Ali, the neighborhood has a proud history as a cultural hub for the entire city prior to urban renewal. However, today it exhibits classic indicators of how neighborhood inequality can play out at the local level. The SDAT has developed a strategy focused on re-connecting the neighborhood to the city physically, economically, and socially. As the College of Design (CoD) at the University of Kentucky begins work on a major expansion, they are seeking an energetic, forward-thinking Director of Philanthropy & Alumni Relations who will be charged with developing a complete alumni networking program to engage our stakeholders in supporting the work of the College. Short and long-term plans for major gift cultivation will be the main directive of this position. Sights on Success
The Sights on Success program resumed in January after an extended holiday break and, as we approach the halfway mark, we remain optimistic about the level of engagement from our program participants and the results that they are reporting to date. We have recorded a 75% pass rate in those reporting their exam progress, which is exciting news for Kentucky's architectural community!
In addition to the dedication that our participants have demonstrated, AIA Kentucky's professional members and allied members have shown a generous commitment to supporting our emerging professionals in their pursuit of licensure, and we continue to be grateful for the provision of office space to gather in, volunteer time to lead workshops and monetary donations for food and beverage. We would specifically like to thank CMW Architects and Engineers for hosting and leading January's workshop on Site Planning and Design (dinner provide by Element Design) and Gray Construction who will be hosting February's workshop on Building Design and Construction Systems this Saturday, 2/6. Breakfast for this workshop will be provided by BLUE Energy Group, one of AIA Kentucky's valued Allied Benefactors.

AIA National Membership exceeded the 2015 year-end target and reached an all-time historical high of nearly 88,000 members as of December 31! This figure is up 2.7% from 2014 year-end totals of 85,566.

Photography Competition
AIA St. Louis recently announced the opening of the 2016 AIA National Photography Competition, with deadline of April 1, 2015. The rules/regulations and entry form for this juried competition can be found here. The winning images will be exhibited at the AIA National convention in Philadelphia in May 2016.
Contract Documents Survey
AIA Contract Documents, in conjunction with Ipsos Insight, is conducting its bi-annual survey of the design and construction industry. The purpose of the survey is to acquire feedback on AIA documents and the state of the industry, so that AIA agreements and forms can be updated and enhanced.
