Largo Presents 'A Grand Night for Singing'

Largo's Eight O'Clock Theatre presents "A Grand Night for Singing" on August 21-23 and 27-30 at the Largo Cultural Center, 105 Central Park Drive. Some all-time Broadway favorites composed by Rodgers and Hammerstein from such shows as South Pacific, The Sound of Music, Carousel, Oklahoma, Cinderella and The King and I. The show is conceived by Walter Bobbie and promises an evening of memorable entertainment.

Gulfport Celebrates the Gecko
Gulfport's whimsical celebration of summer is dedicated to the town's unofficial mascot and favorite reptile. The Gecko Crawl is set for Saturday, Aug. 8, from 4 to 9 p.m. with an afterparty at O'Maddy's starting at 9. Advance tickets are available at the Beach Bazaar.

The Gecko Gras Ball is set for Saturday, Aug. 29, from 6 to 11 p.m. at the Gulfport Casino with music for dancing by the Jammin' Jambalaya Band, hors d'oeuvres and a silent and live auction as well as a Gecko and Mardi Gras costume contest. For more information and ball tickets visit GeckoFest.com.
Tarpon Springs Presents 'A Night in the Islands'
Enjoy Greek dancing, outdoor dining with some of the finest Greek food outside outside of Athens as well as live music and free dance lessons as Tarpon Springs presents "A Night in the Islands" on the famous Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks from 6 to 11 p.m. The event features live music by Ellada, an exciting Greek musical group with three of the best Greek musicians in Florida. They will perform nisiotika, the lively traditional music of the Greek islands, as well as some old and new Greek favorites.

DFAC Wearable Art Eleven August 29
The Dunedin Fine Art Center will hold its annual Wearable Art Show on Saturday, Aug. 29. The event will begin with a Pre-Party at 7, followed by a runway show of some outrageous fashion at 8:30 and a Post-Party at 9:30. This year's show will celebrate 11 years of the Arts Center's "mashup" of fashion and art. With a party atmosphere, the DFAC "Wearable Art" event is always a lot of fun for participants and for the audience.

New this year will be an exhibit of artist-created bras in all media with jurors' and Peoples' Choice cash awards. For tickets and more information, visit www.dfac.org.
Rays Host Clearwater Centennial Day

All residents and employees in Clearwater are invited to participate in a special celebration of the City's Centennial during Clearwater Day at Tropicana Field starting at 1:10 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 9. For only $25 (a $53 value), they will be able to watch the Rays take on the New York Mets from a specially priced seat in the lower level and receive a Rays hat!

Special Art by Special Hands

Join the program's many supporters on Wednesday, Aug. 12, from 5:30-8 p.m. for complimentary wine and hors d'oeuvres at a special exhibition of artwork by the artists of Harborside Studios, a unique program sponsored by The ARC Tampa Bay in Safety Harbor. The annual event will take place at Syd Entel Galleries and Susan Benjamin Glass in Safety Harbor. Artwork sales benefit the Consumers of UPARC.

Escher at the Dali Beginning August 22
A new exhibit of the works of renowned artist M.C. Escher at the Dali in St. Petersburg beginning August 22 and continuing through January 3, 2016. Escher is noted for his impossible constructions and use of visual illusions. The exhibit will feature 135 works covering his entire artistic career. Drawings, prints, a sculpture, wood blocks and more will be on hand for visitors to see.   The exhibit will delve into his exploration of infinity through tessellation, in which shapes fit together perfectly without overlapping, including an enormous woodcut "metamorphosis" (1939-40) which spans 13 ½ feet.

AARP Smart Driver Course Aug. 29

East Lake Community Library will host the AARP Smart Driver Course from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29. The course is a six-hour workshop that will provide drivers 55 and over with defensive driving techniques and proven safety strategies. Register online, by phone or in person with payment made the day of the course - $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members (CHECK ONLY!).

 
Participants will receive a certificate at the end of the workshop that may earn you a multi-year discount on your car insurance! Please bring a light lunch or snacks as there will be a break.

Marly Music Concert Series Continues
The St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts will present three separate concerts during August in its beautiful  Marly Room, where acoustics are so outstanding. Each performance will be from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Marly Room, where acoustics are outstanding. Enjoy Sunday Brunch at the Museum before the concerts beginning at 11 a.m.

On August 2, the Marly Series will feature The Brass Roots Trio with symphonic sounds that can turn into sultry jazz, fiery tangos and even moving spirituals. Next will be pianist Stephen Prutsman on August 16. Prutsman can move easily from classical to jazz to world music as an award-winning pianist, composer and curator, On August 30 Pulse Chamber Music will combine the traditional and contemporary music that earned outstanding reviews at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Boston Symphony Hall and Harvard University.

Comedian Sinbad To Appear in Clearwater
Noted comedian Sinbad will return to Clearwater on Saturday, Aug. 8, for a show beginning at 8 p.m. in the historic Capitol Theatre. Sinbad has been recognized by Comedy Central as one of the top 100 Standup Comedians of All Time and has been keeping audiences laughing for the past two decades. His last stop in Clearwater was a sold-out performance in December, 2013.
