MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Happy New Year and welcome to winter in Cleveland! Let me ask you: are you bundled up or wearing that short sleeve top right now that you thought of saving for a Spring Break trip? If you are anything like me you're not sure how to dress based on our Northeast Ohio weather as you head out the door for work! Honestly, that is just one of the things that makes Cleveland so great - the unpredictable spirit (and weather) that runs throughout our city! One thing that I know for sure to count on in 2016 is the team in place planning events for our WISE membership!
I want to share with you that there is such a wealth of knowledge and fabulous energy from both board members and planning committees making the wheels turn for our organization. The team organizing awesome activities and events throughout the year for WISE Cleveland is providing our members and friends of the organization opportunities to get up close and personal with key executives, city leaders and talented individuals helping shape our industry from January thru June. In the last newsletter I encouraged our membership and colleagues to attend the great fall programming events at Progressive Field, The 9 and our annual holiday party at Cibero Privato. I saw familiar faces and enjoyed getting to know new individuals. And now in this New Year I ask you, are you challenging yourself in educating or staying current in trends? Did you miss our fall programming and can you commit to attending at least two upcoming after work events in 2016? WISE Cleveland programming dates are locked and we are loaded with resources that we want our members and friends to activate!
What's holding you back? Grab the winter coat or that pair of peep toe shoes (depending on the day and the weather) and join me - and the women who have planned a plethora of activity for this extra special year our town is having!

PAST EVENTS RECAPS

WISE AT THE FABULOUS FOOD SHOW

On Friday November 13th   2015, 60 plus WISE members attended the10th Annual Fabulous Food Show at the I-X Center. The afternoon started off with a bang as Michael Symon demonstrated how to make quick and easy Thanksgiving appetizers which included numerous kinds of crostini's and other flavorful appetizers. Beside his cooking demonstration Michael educated us on great food tips and advice about eating. Following the show the WISE women ventured to Napa for a White Wine tasting and wine education. A fun day was had by all as we ate and drank our way through Cleveland's finest.

WISE HOLIDAY PARTY
WISE women kicked off the holiday season at their annual members-only affair, held on December 3, 2015 at Cibreo Privato in the Playhouse Square district. A delightful evening filled with cocktails, hearty appetizers, a fun guess-the-holiday-character game, and lively conversation was enjoyed by all.

Cibreo created a Peppermint-tini as the signature drink, which got everyone into the spirit of the evening! Their chef created an over-flowing buffet of bruschetta, cheeses and petit fours, but the highlight was the chef-attended mac-and-cheese bar. Many people were seen going back for seconds!

Upon entering the party, each person had a name tag placed on their back, with a character of the holiday season printed on it. By asking only yes-or-no questions, they had to figure out the word on their tag, and everyone was successful.

The evening concluded with each woman receiving a bottle of wine to take home, to continue her holiday celebrations another time. But all agreed that the WISE Holiday Party was a terrific way to start the season!

WISE 216 HOOPY HOUR
WISE Members gathered to cheer on our fellow women athletes as Cleveland State Women and Mens basketball teams took on Green Bay during the WISE 216 Hoopy Hour. The WISE Cleveland women enjoyed food, drinks and some basketball during the Cleveland State event!

WISE WITHIN SPEED MENTORING ROUNDTABLE
WISE Cleveland kicked off the new year by lending business and life advice to its members. Hosting a national WISE Within program WISE Cleveland welcomed 5 esteemed Cleveland professionals in the industries of sports, events and beyond to lend a word of wisdom to our members. Big thanks to Skylight Financial for the beautiful space and Crop Bistro for the wonderful food!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

This month's member spotlight falls on WISECleveland Board Member Virnette House-Browning, the Senior Associate Athletics Director/Senior Woman Administrator at Cleveland State University. House-Browning, a native Ohioan who is in her fifth year with the Vikings after spending 16 years at Bradley University, oversees CSU's external relations operations, including athletics communications, marketing, promotions, ticketing and the Viking Club. In addition, she is the sport administrator for cross country, men's soccer, women's basketball and men's and women's tennis.
When she moved to Cleveland in 2011, Virnette-Browning was looking for an organization to get involved with, expand her network, and help to further opportunities for women working in sports.

"I had heard many positive things about the WISE organization and wanted to be get involved," she noted. "I enjoy the opportunity to network with a strong group of motivated women leaders!

"There is so much professional expertise within our organization and resources to utilize, whether professionally or personally.  WISE is about women, working together to advance opportunities for women!"

For new members, she encourages them to GET INVOLVED in the events sponsored throughout the year, whether social and or geared to professional development. "It's a great way to expand your network and learn about other career paths working in the sports and entertainment industry," she said.

House-Browning is also enthusiastic about Cleveland and working downtown.

"There is such a vibrancy and a resurgence of the city and so many things to experience!," she explained.  "I have enjoyed numerous plays and concerts at Playhouse Square, the great restaurants throughout the city, and Wade Oval Wednesday's is one of my favorite things to do in the summer."

Also, the (Cleveland) Metroparks are wonderful!  And of course, the sports offerings in town starting with the Cleveland State Vikings and our three professional sports are second to none," she concluded.
