In your list of New Year resolutions, was one of them to try something new? Or perhaps to volunteer? Or, to learn more about people we can help, not just across the globe, but in our own community? Do you think, "Could it Be Better?"

If so, (even if you're like my husband and don't make resolutions J), let me invite you to be a part of a particularly meaningful and short-term engagement happening in February with United Way.  In fact, when people ask me how did I get involved with United Way, the answer is Citizen's Review Panels. I loved the process and the introduction it gave me to learn more about my community - and the great folks here making it better.

Excuses why we don't try something new:
1.  I don't have a friend to go with me.    (Becca Sutphen will be your new BFF!)  Or better yet, invite a friend to participate too!
2.  I'm afraid of ________.     (There is no public speaking, heights, spiders or snakes.)
3.   I have something important to watch on Netflix.  (DVR it and watch it later!)
4.  My boss won't approve it.  (Try it... we'll be happy to help as needed and send your boss a note and ask for your day off as a work day.)

So here's the opportunity - the invitation. United Way of Greater Kingsport invites YOU to participate in our 2016 Citizen's Review. The purpose of the Citizen's Review process is to allow local citizens to evaluate program funding for our 30 member agencies and make allocations decisions. Dollars raised local stay local. Time requirements are best estimated as  a) 2-hour training session 2) 8-hour day conducting agency visits 3) discretionary time reviewing applications - normally 2-4 hours.  All are done as part of a team or panel. This is truly an exciting opportunity and one that we hope will also benefit you in trying something new. Change begins with action. Come and join us in making a difference in our community!

Jim & Mary Jones,
Signature Club Chairs
United Way of Greater Kingsport hosted its annual Leadership Giving Event on January 19, 2016, recognizing donors who contributed $500 or more to the 2015 Campaign. This year's event was hosted by Jim and Mary Jones and Larry and Teresa Estepp, Chairs and Vice Chairs of the Signature Club. It was held at the Toy F. Reid Employe e Center.

At the event, Craig Denison, 2015 Campaign Chair, shared that Leadership Givers donated $2.17 million of the total $4.3 million raised in 2015,
Larry & Teresa Estepp,
Signature Club Vice Chairs
making up over 50% of campaign donations. "This year's Leadership Giving Event was an opportunity to celebrate and thank those people and organizations across our community whose generosity embodies the message 'A Better Life for All, A Better Life for You," said Denison. "These donors are an integral part of our mission to improve lives in the Greater Kingsport community."

UWGK would like to thank to thank the following event sponsors: Appalachian Power Company, Bank of Tennessee, Brock, Citizens Bank, Domtar, Eastman, Eastman Credit Union, First Tennessee Bank, Jacobs, TEC Industrial, and Trane.

Domtar's Kingsport mill is Giving It Forward as part of their centennial celebration by donating boxes of copy paper to UWGK and each of our member agencies, a total of 5,000 pounds of paper in all.

The donation was covered by Kingsport Times-News. In the article, Bill MacPhearson, Mill Manager, says, " For an entire century, this mill has grown with the local community, and much of that progress is due to the strong support we have received from the community. The activities we have planned for this year are intended to connect with our city's residents and nonprofit organizations on multiple levels and align with the culture of community involvement and support that is cultivated by our employees."

UWGK thanks Domtar for their continued support of our organization and our member agencies, helping us in our mission to improve lives.

UnitedWEREAD.org Launches

The United Way of Greater Kingsport's United WE READ Initiative launched their website, UnitedWEREAD.org

Today, only about half of 3rd grade students in our community are reading on grade level. UWGK knows early-grade literacy is critical to graduating from high school both college and career-ready. That's why we created United WE READ , a collaborative partnership model aimed at advancing the common good by raising visibility, deepening connections, and engaging supporters to build a literacy-rich community. The vision of United WE READ is by the end of 3rd grade, all students will be proficient or advanced in reading.

UnitedWeREAD.org is an extension of this work.  Visitors to the site can learn more about United WE READ and the work they are doing in the community, read the latest news, and learn how they can become involved. Check it out today!
