Reno Airport Passenger Growth

New flights and an improving economy helped the Reno-Tahoe International Airport post a growth in passengers. The Reno airport reported serving 3.43 million passengers in 2015, a 3.9 percent increase from the previous year.

The numbers include especially strong traffic during the holiday season. Reno-Tahoe International saw 286,432 passengers in December, an 8.6 percent increase from the same month in 2014. The airport also reported seven straight months of passenger growth.

The trend reverses years of decline as Northern Nevada struggled from the recession and lost routes. Just this week, Las Vegas-based carrier Allegiant Air announced that it is adding a direct flight to Los Angeles International Airport in June, joining American, Southwest and United Airlines in serving the route. The airport is also regaining a direct link to Oakland in June via Southwest Airlines.

Other key routes for Reno-Tahoe International include the addition of direct flights to Mexico in 2014 through Volaris and to New York City in 2015 via JetBlue, as well as service to Boise and Orange County last year.

Overall, however, 2015 proved to be a banner year for the airport. In addition to its first year-over-year growth in passenger numbers since 2005, the airport also reported record cargo hauls.

Reno-Tahoe International handled nearly 138.3 million pounds of air cargo last year. The amount, which represents a 7.1 percent increase from 2014, is also the highest ever recorded for the airport. December once again proved to be a busy period, posting a 13.5 percent annual increase in cargo with nearly 18 million pounds going through the facility during the month.
