King Calls for Reauthorization of Perkins Act for Career and Technical Education
U.S. Department of Education
 Acting U.S. Education Secretary John B. King Jr. today called on Congress to reauthorize the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act, which provides more than $1.1 billion for the nation's career and technical education programs in grades 7-12 and also in post-secondary institutions.

Promoting Innovation and Maintaining High Standards in Teacher Education through ESSA

On January 28
th Thomas Arnett published an essay here on the Brown Center Chalkboard on changes to teacher
 preparation programs brought on by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The new provision authorizing states to establish
Teacher Preparation Academies will, according to Arnett, "unlock innovation" and enable the field to address its enduring problems.

White House Adds 15 Communities for 'TechHire' Initiative, Including Seattle
GeekHire
 The White House today doubled the amount of communities participating in its "TechHire" initiative that aims to equip Americans with the skills they need to land jobs in the tech industry. Launched one year ago with 21 communities, TechHire brings together private companies with city and state governments to help prepare underemployed folks for tech-related jobs by utilizing both universities and colleges, but also non-traditional education methods like coding bootcamps which provide an accelerated path toward employment.

Computer Science is the Key to America's Skills Crisis

The United States faces a global competitiveness crisis that, if not addressed, will put our nation at a strategic disadvantage for decades to come. In just a few years, there will be 1.8 million jobs unfilled in our nation because we don't have enough individuals trained with the necessary technical skills to fill them. President Obama's budget proposal, which includes $4 billion for computer science education, is a welcome step, but, candidly, we need a national strategy to solve the fundamental challenge. Today, only one in 10 schools across the U.S. offers programming classes. This must change.

Math and Science Grants of $10,000 and $25,000 Available for Rural School Districts
America's Farmers Grow Rural Education partners with farmers to help school districts fund math and science projects to enhance STEM curriculum in across rural America. Between now and April 1, eligible farmers can nominate an eligible public school district in their community. Nominated school districts can then submit grant applications for a $10,000 or $25,000 math and science grant through April 15, 2016.

Progress Toward Quality K-12 STEM Education: Resources for Policymakers, Researchers, and Educators
The National Research Council (NRC) highlights 14 indicators of progress in the nation's STEM education, including student learning, educators' capacity, and policy and funding initiatives. Their 2013 report, Monitoring Progress Toward Successful K-12 STEM Education, argues that collecting data on these indicators can inform monitoring and improve STEM education.
Register Today for the University of Tennessee Design Matters Camp
The University of Tennessee College of Architecture and Design offers a summer camp for high school students from across the country. It's all about design - design of the built environment, design thinking, design interpretation and careers in design. Students live on campus for a week and are engaged with both instruction and campus activities.
