Congratulations to Joan Webb Scornaienchi for Receiving the

MLK, Jr. Holiday Commission's Living the Dream Award

Circuit Court Judge William V. Tucker, HC DrugFree's Board Emeritus and County Executive Allan Kittleman joined Joan Webb Scornaienchi, Executive Director of HC DrugFree, on stage as she received the Living the Dream Award at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Celebration on Sunday, January 18 at 3:00 PM. The award included a personalized plaque and a monetary gift of $300.

The Howard County Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission selected Joan as the Individual Honoree for the Living the Dream Award for her many personal and professional contributions to the community.

Joan received her first "Diversity Award" in 1991 while employed at Kent State University where she was known for her commitment to strengthen race relations on campus. She took that commitment to the Maryland State Department of Education where she mentored inner-city youth and volunteered to serve on workgroups addressing racial disproportionality in Special Education.

Dr. David Anderson, pastor of Bridgeway Church, was keynote speaker and shared his thoughts on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. County Executive Kittleman and Council Chair Mary Kay Sigaty also addressed the audience.

The event was held in the Smith Theatre, Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center, Howard Community College in Columbia, and a reception preceded the celebration.

Attendees had the opportunity to view a new art exhibition, Keeping the Dream Alive: Moving Forward. Organized by the Martin Luther King, Jr., Holiday Commission, Howard County Public Schools and Howard Community College, the exhibit showcased the artwork of School System students, grades K through 12. The exhibit was on display in the Rouse Company Foundation Gallery from January 7 to 18.
