th. It was such a success last year that we are doing it again! This year will again be full of music, fun, and great food!! For all students who want to attend, they will need to have a 90% attendance rate.

Superbowl Champ Returns to TJ as Head Football Coach
|
We are proud to announce that TJ Alumnus Derrick Martin has been chosen to become the next Head Football Coach at TJ. Derrick, a 2003 graduate, was a standout three sport athlete while at TJ participating in football, basketball and track. He was a state qualifier in track and helped lead the Spartan football team to the state semi-finals his senior year losing to eventual state champion Columbine. He attended the University of Wyoming on a football scholarship and was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens. He was a two-time Super Bowl Champion with the Green Bay Packers and New York Giants. His nine year NFL career also included stops in New England and Chicago. Derrick was the consensus top choice by both the search committee and the student athlete panel. We are excited to move into the next phase of Spartan Football under his leadership. Thank you to everyone who participated in the process and helped us make this important selection. GO SPARTANS!

4/6/16-4/15/16: PARCC 9th grade (schedule below)
4/19/16: PSAT 10 (10th graders) and ACT (11th graders) No 9th or 12th graders
4/25/16: CMAS 11th grade....still developing schedule
5/2/16-5/13/16: AP Exams (schedule attached...still working on rooms and proctors)

PARCC Testing is on the Horizon
|
|
Please note: participation rates for 2016 testing may impact SPF scores. All students are expected to attend school during these testing periods.
The PARCC online testing will begin at TJ in April. Our 9th graders will take the PARCC ELA/Math test. The purpose of the state test is to formally assess how students can perform in regards to grade level Common Core Standards. This is also an accountability measure to ensure that schools are adequately preparing students. We will receive the results in much more timely fashion this year. This will allow us to adjust school-wide instructional strategies at the beginning of the year. I am glad to say this is a much better set up than last year.
9th graders will begin testing on April 6th. We will work on an adjusted schedule so students will still attend all classes during our

djusted schedule.

PSAT 10 and ACT - free for all students!
Thomas Jefferson is excited to announce that we will be administering the PSAT 10 along with the ACT this year on April 19th starting at 7:30 am. Sophomores will take the PSAT 10 and Juniors will take the ACT. Due to testing, there will be no school for 9th and 12th graders that day. Be sure your students are well rested and come prepared. Students should bring with them: pencils, approved calculators (TI84 or similar is acceptable) and their school id's. After endless hours of preparation, fourteen Spartans competed in the 2016 DECA State Conference.
Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) is an organization that has been around for nearly 70 years, preparing students for college and career-readiness by allowing them to experience the work force. Members gain this knowledge by being exposed to elements like public speaking and thinking under pressure. Fourteen TJ students spent many hours studying, role-playing, and preparing themselves for the State Conference, which was held on February 20-23, at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs. The directions to log on to IC and choose classes are:
1. Log onto your Student Portal
2. Click on attendance in the left side column
3. Click on the red sentence that goes diagonally across the calendar. (that takes you to IC)
4. Course Registration is first at the top of the list.
Be sure to enter both semester choices for a total of 14.
Counselors will be in the computer labs on March 9, 16, and 23rd for help.

- Prom, 4/23, 8-11pm at the Curtis Room in Landmark (DTC). It's sure to be a grand time! We will be looking for parent volunteers to help with various aspects of prom in the coming weeks, stay tuned to the newsletter for updates. Class of 2016 will also be providing opportunities to purchase corsages and boutineers for Prom. Details coming soon!
- After Prom Event - After much discussion with the students, it has been decided that there will be no official after prom event held this year. The After Prom committee will be working with the prom committee to support prom efforts and host other special events for the seniors in the coming months to support the Class of 2016 as they look toward their futures!! Thomas Jefferson Ski Club has gained praise as they continue to provide students with incredible opportunities this winter with various trips to Winter Park. Both beginners and experts have enjoyed skiing with the club this year, and all students are encouraged to join as tickets are only $6.00.

Creative Industries Summer Internship

Accepting Applications Now!
This summer the Center for Visual Art (CVA) at MSU Denver will host a high school internship program in collaboration with Goodwill Industries. Building on the success of previous years, interns will contribute to OhHeckYeah!
We partner with OhHeckYeah!, an organization whose mission is to create community through play:

This project-based internship exposes young creatives to the local professional sector and engages the next generation in the Denver arts community.
Interns will:
Engage in challenging, though provoking, collaborative art projects;

With college admission decisions on the horizon, upperclassmen are adjusting their focus toward college preparation. With college and scholarship application deadlines quickly approaching, seniors are making decisions regarding where they want to attend college in the Fall of 2016.

Graduation for All Campaign
|
Some students don't walk across the graduation stage... and not for the reason you think.
They have the grades.
They have the credits.
They may have even been accepted to college already.
Then they get the order form for the cap, gown and graduation announcements, and that's where it stops.
The basic graduation expenses at one Denver high school start at $46 for just the cap and gown. For many of us $46 is what we spend on coffee for the week. Add in announcements and senior pictures, and the cost is a real burden or even impossible for some families.
The Graduation for All Fund helps those for whom the graduation ceremony is out of reach.
